October 22, 2010

The depth of sin to which people can sink is beyond fathoming. Sexual abuse in a religious home? Yes: it happens. The family is in trouble. Both external influences and our internal bent toward sin conspire to wreak havoc on those we love, or claim to love. Abuse within families is epidemic. Today: how to deal with the one secret people will do anything to keep.

Why would a man ever abuse his own wife? How could someone knowingly and intentionally scar a son or daughter for life? The root causes can be complex, as can be the ways the abuser goes about carrying out his abuse. Today: some of the personality types that practice abuse in their own families, and how to recognize the symptoms early on.

Some of us had bad fathers. But unless we are reconciled with them, we won’t be able to stop the cycle of family breakdown. When it comes to family life, the Bible shows us both the good and the bad in the lives of kings and commoners alike. As dads, we can avoid the mistakes our fathers made if we make peace with them, and then resolve to live godly lives as examples for our own kids.

It is a jungle out there, and it is getting worse. Between the wasteland of TV and decaying morality, our kids are in more danger than ever. Ancient fortresses had walls, gates, and guards. It is high time for dads to put on some armor and start protecting their kids against those who’d like nothing more than to corrupt them for life. Fathers: are you ready for a real challenge?

There is one nut that is very tough to crack: the sullen attitude of a rebellious child. It is dad who is the key to cracking it. Much of the anguish in today’s families can be traced to fractured relationships between fathers and their children. Today we learn a few ways to open those clenched fists and hearts, and restore both dialogue and love where once it was missing.

There is one man whose imprint on our lives can never be erased. Even from the grave we feel the impact of our fathers. We all know that fathers are normally the family breadwinners. But in the Bible, fathers are also responsible for the spiritual well-being of their wives and children. Today we will explore the power of a dad’s example for good or ill.

In the media, Super-Mom is usually a mother run ragged dragging her kids to activities seven days a week. But the real “super-mom” is a woman who draws strength from the Lord, and lives a life of faithfulness to her calling as a wife and mother. This kind of woman was exemplified in the book of Proverbs. If we had more like her, our families would be in much better shape.

Go to a supermarket and check out the magazine counter. There you will see the qualities the world thinks makes the perfect woman. They have perfect hair, perfect complexions, and probably, several imperfect husbands in a row. Well, let’s forget the fashion magazines and focus on the Bible’s “perfect woman” chapter. Here we will see what really matters when God evaluates each woman and mother.
