You Own a Certificate of Acquittal #3 of 4

May 13, 2010
As a monk, Martin Luther would go to confession for hours at a time, trying to be sure his every sin would be forgiven. Did this guarantee him a place in heaven? No, it did not. Certainty only came when he discovered the principle of justification by faith. Confessing sins is fine, but that next sin lies in wait around the corner. Today we see why believers can rejoice in their acquittal before God.

"Will the defendant please rise?" The courtroom is hushed as the judge reads the indictment. Your guilt seems sure. But then a court official steps forward with a certificate of acquittal: a document affirming that the sentence has been carried out...on another person on your behalf. In Romans 8:33, Paul asks "Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God that justifies...."

A death-row inmate faces a grim prospect. His date with execution will soon arrive. He's got nowhere to turn. But sometimes, a governor will commute the sentence, or set him free if new evidence is discovered. In a moment, the inmate's outlook leaps from despair to joy. We all deserve a spiritual death-row sentence. Today we look at another gift God has bestowed on those who trust Christ.

We humans are capable of some pretty awful things. The long history of war, oppression and greed proves that. Being basically selfish, we'd never turn from sin were it not for the grace of God being extended to us. Redemption is entirely God's idea, that theme runs through the whole Bible. And God's children inherit the riches of that redemption.

In the movie "National Treasure," explorers find a vast horde of gold and jewels after tracking clues to its whereabouts. When Christians explore the Bible, they find a vast horde: blessings that they will inherit as children of God. Our outlook on life becomes an uplook when we realize what lies ahead. Today we hear a partial listing of what you inherited the moment you received Christ.

"If God be for us, who can be against us?" Paul's great question in Romans chapter eight is one we must answer. Some point to circumstances and say they've been abandoned by God. How do we reconcile the promise of the Bible with the reality of our personal situations? Today: another look at a famous portion of scripture, and some help in making it real.

How would you react if a lawyer called, saying you'd just inherited a million dollars from a distant relative? Disbelief? Sure, but later, reality would sink in when the check was placed in your shaking hands. Well, if you're a believer, you have a check waiting for you at the bank of heaven. And it's for far more than a mere million. Listen here for the details.

None of us chose to be born to our parents. It would be folly to think we could've had a say in coming into this world. The birth process into God's family is no different. Peter says, "as newborn babes desire the sincere milk of the word." God graciously makes sure we are spiritually born, and then provides the resources we need to grow in that grace as His children.

Those who believe in Jesus and have found new life all share a common reality: they were chosen by God in eternity past. Before they were born, God knew they would share in His eternal kingdom. This would involve forgiving their sins and declaring them to be as righteous as His Son. If life now seems uncertain, know this: your future is as secure as the God who will make sure you get there.

Trying to understand fully the mind of God is a bit like taking a drink from a firehose. There's way too much for us to grasp. Comprehending His purposes in the crucial area of personal salvation is something we need to come to grips with. In the majestic eighth chapter of Romans, the matter is at the core of Paul's teaching. Today: a clear look at what, for many, is a hard-to-understand part of the Christian faith.

These days, seeker-friendly churches are everywhere. We assume people will seek God, if we make them comfortable. As a believer matures in the faith, he or she comes to realize that salvation is not so much a result of our seeking God as it is the result of God choosing us first. Listen to learn why, if God had not done this, none of us would ever have chosen Him.
