When You Choose Second Best #1 of 3

November 11, 2010
Why do we make poor choices? There are many reasons. Sometimes we sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the immediate. Whatever the reason, all of us make some bad decisions. The challenge then is what to do about them. Our current series brings hope to those of us who’ve made choices we’d give anything to make again. Today: lessons from the people of Israel during the conquest of Canaan.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When you hear the word “Eden,” you think of an idyllic paradise with no worries: the ideal place to live a carefree life. But the real Eden didn’t stand a chance. When Adam and Eve sinned, paradise turned sour, and man’s fate was sealed. Life would be hard, and were it not for the grace of a redeeming God, there would have been no hope for our rebellious race.

In a perfect place, two people made a decision that would bring calamity to billions of people yet to be born. Adam and Eve had no excuse. Their sin brought immediate judgment, but it also brought mercy. God put in motion a plan to redeem mankind from the curse of sin, a plan signified by the first human clothing made of fig leaves. Today: we look at what that means.

Being deceived: believing what isn’t true, or, believing in what agrees with your desires, despite the facts. The first woman was deceived by the devil, and the first man followed suit. We humans have listened to the voice of the great liar from the very beginning. The results? Catastrophic. Today: more on the long-term consequences of believing a lie.

Hindsight is 20-20. Anyone can see the results of a choice after it’s made. It’s tougher to predict the future. What do you do when you’ve made a bad call, and have to live with it? The Bible has many examples of this, and today we begin a series on Making the Best of a Bad Decision. We will learn that there is hope, even if we have really messed things up.

The family is on life support these days, and it’s up to us as Christians to show by example the value and power of a godly family. Keeping our kids from moral harm is high on the agenda, and today we’ll hear some more commandments for parents designed to help us.
