When The Answer Is Disaster #2 of 4

September 23, 2009
America looks a lot like the Israel that Habakkuk the prophet had to deal with. Things are bad and getting worse. The prophet's dialogs with God reveal a man wrestling with how God could seemingly be out of touch with how tough things really were. Today, we'll get into the heart of the prophet's complaint as we learn lessons on praying during dark times.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Our nation seems to be heading down a path toward more government control and less freedom. So, what should Christians do? It's not unlike the scenario painted by Habakkuk the prophet: things were bad and getting worse. In all that was happening, he was asking God "Where are You?" Disaster was near, and it seemed God was not concerned. Today: lessons from a prophet on prayer.

When God answers our prayers in ways we don't expect, He's reminding us that it's Him we really need, not the answers. Today, we're concluding a message on making sure our relationships with God are strong and growing, realizing that knowing Him is far more vital than getting what we want from Him. Stay with us for some practical ways to strengthen your connection with God.

There's a process that takes place as we mature as Christians. Our prayers shift from asking for things, to asking for God. That's why some of our prayers are answered in ways that surprise us. God wants a relationship with each of His children, a relationship that transcends all the daily details we think are so crucial. That's why His responses to our prayers may be disguised.

Sometimes, we ask God for things we clearly need. No answer is forthcoming. But then, out of left field, another answer comes our way. Prayer is something of a mystery. We're commanded to ask in faith, without doubting. The answers sometimes come from unexpected directions, even unrelated to what we asked for. Today: another perspective on the matter of unanswered prayer: answers in disguise.

Scan your cable TV box...sooner or later you'll land on a channel offering faith healing services. Watch out. All too many people bring high hopes to these kinds of meetings, only to leave disappointed, told that they lacked enough faith to claim their rightful healing. Can believers expect physical healing on demand? Today: some straight talk on when God fulfills His promises.

Most of us get antsy when having to wait more than five minutes at McDonald's. Oh, to be Abraham in the Old Testament. God gave this man promises that would not come to pass for hundreds of years. Abraham died before seeing any of them fulfilled. Next time you feel like God is a bit slow in answering your prayers, remember: His scale of time is bigger than yours...He has a larger agenda.
September 15, 2009
Our lifespans are microscopic when measured against a vast eternity. God has a much longer timeframe. Abraham would never live to see the promises God made to him come to pass. In that light, who are we to complain when our prayers are not answered right away? Today, we'll gain a larger perspective on prayer than many of us may have ever had.

We're truly creatures of time, and waiting means minutes, hours and days. But months and years? That's tough. When we pray for something, we hope for a quick response from God. But God has His own clock, not always in sync with ours. How do we handle prayers that, to us, are time critical, when the answers seem to be anything but?

Someone has said, "Pressure produces." It's when we're in the crucible of suffering that our characters are refined and our character is what God is interested in...even more than in answering our prayers when we think He should. Unanswered prayers and suffering form in us the quality of endurance. Today: more on what to do when prayer does not seem to work.
September 10, 2009
When we pray, and the answers to our prayers don't come on our schedule, many of us lose heart. Does this happen to you? Perhaps we don't grasp the real reason for praying. The Bible tells us that trials and suffering produce endurance, a lasting quality with which God is very pleased. Are you enduring well these days? Am I? Today, more lessons on what to do "When the Promises Don't Work."
