When Jesus Observes Our Hearts, Part 3 of 3 (What Jesus Thinks of His Church)

July 29, 2016

Today’s church is rich in wealth, but poor in spiritual power. That’s the same indictment handed down by Jesus to the ancient church at Laodicea. He may have had our day in mind when He said, “Because you say ‘I’m rich’… you don’t know that you’re wretched, miserable, blind and naked.”

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Jesus had strong words for the lukewarm Laodicean church in Revelation chapter three. His tough love included a way for them to regain their lost fervor. His rebuke and chastening would lead to renewal and power.

As Jesus evaluated seven successive churches in the book of Revelation, some Bible scholars see the passing of history, with each church representing an era of time. Is your church spiritually robust, or, like the one at Laodicea, is it lukewarm?

The early church at Philadelphia earned high marks from Jesus for its faithfulness and its vision. They persevered, they kept His word, and they never denied His name. They demonstrate the importance of seizing the open doors Jesus sets before us.

In what is now Turkey, the church at Philadelphia was commended by Jesus for being faithful to His name. Churches still grow even in hostile places… churches about which Jesus says, “I’ve set before you an open door, and no one can shut it.”

Jesus addressed seven local churches in the book of Revelation. Often, His words were sharp. But to one church, His words were only kind. Why was this church praised? Can we hear the same words of commendation?

In the end, only one thing will matter: whether you as a believer were an overcomer. Jesus makes that clear as He analyzes seven local churches in the book of Revelation. Overcomers will be given white garments, because Jesus will say they are worthy.

“Be watchful….hold fast what you’ve heard….repent….or else I will come upon you as a thief…” These are the words of Jesus to an ancient church. Could he be saying this to your church or our church?

Some churches think all is well. Great attendance convinces them God is doing a mighty work. But one of the churches in Revelation was proclaimed to be dead by Jesus, even though it thought it was alive!

Jesus mentions overcomers many times during His evaluation of seven ancient churches in the book of Revelation. But what makes an overcomer? And what are they to overcome? Let’s investigate God’s Word to them and us. Do you want to be an overcomer?

It takes gall to celebrate sin in a church. Yet this happened at Thyatira, a church singled out by Jesus for judgment in the book of Revelation. Its false prophetess advocated sexual immorality. And false prophets in our time advocate for false teachings and sinful behavior too!
