Sometimes we Christians think times are tough. But they never get as tough as they were for Jesus when He faced the cross... No one was ever brought from such depths and raised to such glory as Jesus. In Psalm 22 we see a man being cruelly put to death, and yet later, He is seen very much alive, praising the name of God in triumph. Today: why God's purposes will always be accomplished.

The way things are going these days, it may seem like the church is losing ground to an advancing culture of paganism... It may appear like we're heading toward defeat. But in reality, the power of the gospel cannot be stopped, even by the gates of hell. Today: a reminder that those who name the name of Christ are on the winning side after all.

It would be a long journey from tending sheep in the desert to commanding Egypt's pharaoh, "Let my people go." Moses was molded by God through four decades in a desert to ultimately lead Israel out of bondage into freedom. Your life's road may be rocky at times as well. But it's those desert lessons that prepare us to be used by God in ways we cannot imagine.

If life was a bed of roses, we'd never appreciate how good roses smell. For Moses, the desert gave him that appreciation.... Herding sheep was Moses' lot for 40 years, a time during which God was preparing him for leadership beyond his wildest dreams. And many of us are now in the desert, learning lessons for a future day when we will understand why we needed to learn them.

Most of us know Moses parted the Red Sea as Egypt's Pharaoh "let his people go." Lesser known is how Moses got there.... The race of life for Moses led him through valleys as well as mountains. One of those valleys was a 40-year stint in the desert tending sheep: quite a comedown from his role at Pharaoh's palace. Today: a lesson on preparation for true leadership.

Christmas Day: a welcome break from the hectic days that are finally over. Spend some time now remembering Jesus.... The "peace on earth" spoken of in the Christmas story will not happen until Jesus sets up his kingdom on earth. He will deliver the whole world from the scourge of war. But when He first came to live among men, very few people understood that.

The Jews of Jesus' day were enslaved by the Roman Empire, eager for anyone to deliver them from Caesar's yoke.... That's why some saw in Jesus the deliverer that had been foretold. They wanted a leader to overthrow Rome's tyranny. But Jesus had a larger deliverance to make: a deliverance from the power of sin. Today: we'll see Jesus from God's vantage point.

In a Nazareth synagogue, Jesus opened a scroll of Isaiah the prophet and began to read. A hush fell over the audience.... He read of good news for the poor, freedom for prisoners, sight for the blind, and liberty for the oppressed, ending by saying "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your ears." Only the Son of God could say that.

Parking lots at the mall: they're full, even when the economy is bad. After all, it's Christmas...we've got to finish shopping... It's all so far from the way things were at the time of Christ. Through a simple, uncluttered life, He taught us by example how to serve one another. Today: we conclude our look at Christ the Servant as foreseen in the writings of Isaiah.
