Every fisherman knows that a fish cannot resist a worm on a hook. That tempting morsel brings the fish to his own doom. Just so, all of us have worms on hooks we find hard to resist. Desire, especially sexual desire, can lure us to do things we know are wrong. Our hearts can be swayed away from God unless we take steps to prevent it.

Imagine yourself in a boat that is safe and dry. Across the pond another boat is leaking and sinking. You may think you are okay. In contrast to this, in terms of moral temptation, we are all in the same boat. Whether in the church or not, all of us as humans are prone to moral sins, and the media makes such sinning easy.

Jeremiah the prophet surveyed the wickedness of his day and lamented, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick, who can understand it?” In this internet age it’s no surprise that immorality is rampant, since we are predisposed to evil in the first place. How should Christians protect themselves from the media onslaught shouting from their computers and TV screens?

Never before has the believer in Christ faced the onslaught of moral temptation that faces everyone who clicks with a mouse. The Word of God is replete with warnings to avoid places that put us at risk of moral failure. In times past, that meant “don’t buy a pornographic magazine.” Now it means “don’t go to an explicit website.” The forces of evil want your heart, and today, we learn more about this battle.

It has been said that America will fall, not by the guns of its enemies, but by the moral rot of its citizens. The media is one reason why. The more “online” we become, the more exposed we are to powerful forces determined to make us addicts to moral perversity and the occult. The danger is very real and the evidence is everywhere.

A runner knows that the pain he feels will cease when the race is over. The hurt will not last forever. This gives him hope. A Christian knows that the pain of this life will end when Christ returns to Earth. That certainty enables us to withstand persecution, deprivation, and even death itself.

For believers in the race of life, the ultimate goal line is still ahead. When Christ returns, all our labors will end. The hope of Christ’s return has motivated Christians for two thousand years. And that return in power is nearer now than ever. Only a few saw Jesus rise into heaven, but every eye will see Him when He returns.

There is coming a day for believers in which the race of this life will end. No more running, no more track, no more labor. That day is the bright hope for Christians: the day Jesus returns. That day will be like no other day before or since. And because the Scriptures cannot be broken, that promised day is an absolute certainty.

One thing runners need is power—physical power and mental power—in order to give a race all they have. The disciples of Christ got a foretaste of His power when they saw Him ascend into heaven. As a cloud hid His rising form from view, attending angels reminded them that Jesus would one day return in great power and majesty.

When Jesus ascended into heaven, He went to prepare a place for us. And though only a few saw Jesus rise into the sky, the entire world will see Him return.
