The High Cost of Lost Opportunities #3 of 3

April 8, 2009
When Jesus cursed a fig tree for not bearing fruit, He was telling us that His followers had better bear fruit He could approve. As the poet wrote, "Only one life, 'twill soon be past...only what's done for Christ will last." Today: some lessons we can take home from a very serious event in the life of Jesus right before His own death.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When we think of Palm Sunday, we think of adoring crowds cheering a King. We don't tend to think of a cursed fig tree. But just one day after riding into Jerusalem, Jesus did indeed curse a fig tree for not bearing fruit. As we come to understand this event, it's clear that our bearing fruit is very important to God. What are the implications for you and me?

We read the ads in the paper: "sale ends Tuesday." But we know there will soon be another sale, and so we're really not impressed. But some opportunities really do have a limited time window. Jesus presented Himself to the nation Israel when He entered Jerusalem on a donkey. They rejected Him, and the city was later destroyed. For some powerful lessons, please stay with us.

A runner knows that the pain he feels will cease when the race is over. The hurt will not last forever. This gives him hope. A Christian knows that the pain of this life will end when Christ returns to the earth. That certainty enables us to withstand persecution, deprivation, and even death itself. Today: another episode in our thrilling future comes to an end.

For believers in the race of life, the ultimate goal line is still ahead. When Christ returns, all our labors will end. The hope of Christ's return has motivated Christians for two thousand years. And that return in power is nearer now than ever. Only a few saw Jesus rise into heaven, but every eye will see Him return to vanquish His enemies. Today: the glorious details continue.

There is coming a day for believers in which the race of this life will end. No more running, no more track, no more labor. That day is the bright hope for Christians...the day Jesus returns. That day will be like no other day before or since. And because the scriptures cannot be broken, that promised day is an absolute certainty.

One thing runners need is power...physical power, mental power, and a power in spirit to give the race all they have. The disciples of Christ got a foretaste of His power when they saw Him ascend into heaven. As a cloud hid His rising form from view, attending angels reminded them that Jesus would one day return in great power and majesty.

Believers who run the race of the Christian life don't run alone. Christ ascended to bring many sons and daughters to glory. His ascension was "step one" in creating the church...the body of Christ on the earth, left here to bear witness to Him until His return. Only a few saw Jesus rise into the sky, but a multitude no one can number will see Him return.

He came as a babe in poverty. He left earth in triumphant glory. And His departure foretells the power of His return. We who run the race of the Christian life know that Jesus is sitting even now at God's right hand. And His ascension into heaven opened its gates for us. Why is the ascension important? Surprisingly, it was the key to founding the church: the body of Christ.

Of all the religious founders who've ever lived, only one is still living. Only one has opened the door to heaven. We who run the race of the Christian life owe everything to a risen Christ. His tomb is empty. No other past guru or prophet can say that...their bones prove they're still dead. Jesus is alive and sitting at the right hand of God the Father, waiting to return in glory to this earth.
