The Helmet of Salvation #1 of 4

July 16, 2009
We've all heard the phrase, "a mind is a terrible thing to waste." It's also a terrible thing to let fall into Satan's influence. Someone else has said, "What you think, you are." It's vital to protect our minds from the devil's attacks. And the helmet of salvation is just what we need when doubts arise about our status as God's children. Today: how to use yet another piece of the armor of God.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." By faith we grasp the hand of God. Satan wants to disconnect us from our faith by bombarding us with doubts. The last thing he wants to see is a Christian on fire for the Lord and certain of his or her mission and destiny. Today: how to make the best use of your shield of faith.

In The Lord of the Rings, the evil Grimmer Wormtongue whispers lies into the ears of the King of Rohan. He's just like Satan, who whispers lies into our ears. His goal: to make us ineffective as soldiers in the battle for truth. The shield of faith is what we need when beset with thoughts like "I'm no good...I can't live for God...it's too hard." Today: learning to use your shield.

There are times in the life of every believer when things get so bad that we doubt God's care. That's when Satan strikes. Flaming arrows come our way challenging our faith, making us question if God is truly good. Today: why you and I need the shield of faith to deflect these missiles of doubt, and, how we're to use this piece of spiritual armor.

Flaming arrows...that's the image the Bible uses when describing the attacks of the devil on believers who want to live for God. There is a defense Christians can use to ward off Satan's fiery darts. We can protect ourselves with what the Apostle Paul calls "the shield of faith." Today, we'll learn how to use this piece of the armor of God, and see how a strong faith can block arrows of doubt.

Some think peace is just the absence of conflict. But God can give us inner calm even when the world is topsy-turvy. Jesus knew His disciples would face extreme trials. Most would die as martyrs after suffering great persecution. The peace He left them is one of the weapons in the armor of God, a weapon we're told to wear as shoes. So, how's your peace today?

Taking the gospel of peace to a world under Satan's dominion: that's a sure way to find yourself immediately at war. The devil sets his sights on any believer obeying the command to take the gospel to another person. Only by having the peace of God within, can that believer withstand the attacks of Satan from without. Today: more from Paul's teaching on the armor of God - our equipment for victory.

"Peace I leave with you...my peace I give unto you...." The words of Jesus are very dear when circumstances get tough. The peace of God is unlike any kind of peace we can get from the world. God's peace is there even when it seems all hope is lost. And this peace is a great defense when the devil is on the attack. Today: making sure we have the peace Jesus promised.

Inner calm: it's great when everything around you is a swirl of conflict. In trying times, peace is what we need. And peace is much more than just a sense of well-being. Its basis is what Paul calls "the gospel of peace," good news that gives us assurance of a future that will transcend our daily stress. Are you experiencing the peace of God today? If not, listen with us.

It's one thing to believe that the righteousness of Jesus can be credited to our account before a holy God. But it's another to put that knowledge to use when we find ourselves sinning every day. The devil keeps accusing us of falling short of God's standards. Today: some practical ways to wear "The Breastplate of Righteousness."

In some religions, the idea is: do as many good works as you can. At your judgment, you hope the good works outweigh the bad. Believers can rejoice that Jesus bestows His personal righteousness as a gift on those who are His. God sees our sins through the perfection of His Son, and can legally declare us as righteous as He is. This stops the devil in his tracks.
