Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. The Holy Spirit is not only with us, He is in us. When we sin, He is grieved. When we think that no one cares, He comforts us. When we can’t pray because our circumstances are so dark, He prays on our behalf.

Jesus promised His disciples a companion who would be with them after He was gone. That companion was the Holy Spirit, and He’s still doing for today’s disciples what He did for the original twelve so long ago. So when you think that no one cares, the Holy Spirit is with you for fellowship and companionship. He will not leave you.

For those who have believed in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit is in them and beside them as a helper, comforter and teacher. He’s here to birth holiness in us and to keep us on a trajectory towards holiness. So if we let the Spirit have His way, He’ll consume everything in our lives that isn’t holy. He will purify us.

Who is the Holy Spirit? To put it simply, the Holy Spirit is a person. He’s not an “influence.” He has all of the attributes of personality. He has intellect. He has emotions. He has a will. He also has all of the attributes of deity. He is omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent.

Some philosophers see both good and evil in human nature. For them, the side that wins is determined by our environment. As much as we’d like to take credit for being basically nice people, only the new life implanted by God in the new birth can take a bad man and make him good.

If you think your sins are too big or too many, think about the Apostle Paul. He persecuted Christians—even to their deaths. But God changed his heart and his desires, and he became the author of a good chunk of the New Testament. His love for God, for Christ, and for God’s Word is on every page he wrote.

We are all sinners, yet we can be made good. Our desires can change, but they can only be changed by God. You need a love for Him, His word, and a love for others. You need a sense of brokenness and humility. These can only be implanted into your heart by God.

Can a bad man be made good? First, we need to define who is “bad.” According to the Bible, we are all bad. When it comes to sin, we all have a pre-existing condition. We’re all desire driven and accustomed to evil.

In order to come clean and walk in the true light, confession and restoration must be as wide as the offense—both with God and with others. Are you going to receive God’s full blessing or not?
