Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It's easy to fit in, to follow the crowd, to blend with the trend, to accept whatever we encounter without question. But we're called to run life's race, not in the well-worn ruts, but on the high ground of God's word. Today: why we must discern right from wrong, and truth from error. Otherwise, we'll have little if any impact on a world in dire need of Jesus.

The Bible says, "Don't let the world press you into its mold." Yet that's exactly what has happened in church after church. The world is happy to accommodate various viewpoints, as long as none claim to be the truth. As we adopt that tolerance, we're sliding down a slippery slope towards making no difference in the world at all. Clearly, it's time to get back on track.

Years ago, people could see a big difference between the world and the church. Sadly, that difference is fast disappearing. Now, we're in the fast lane with everybody else, racing to acquire more goods for our short-term benefit. Many feel that evangelical distinctives are fading as the cultural noise level rises. It's high time for some straight talk about what can be done.

"For without faith it is impossible to please God...." This Bible verse is the key to seeing victory when all seems lost. Living in triumph means knowing that nothing can separate you from the love of God, not even death or the death of someone close to you. Only the Christian can face the worst life has to offer and know it's but a steppingstone to a glory that will never end.

Romans chapter eight ranks in the pantheon of the greatest words ever penned. The chapter ends in utter triumph. Paul declares that nothing in all creation will ever separate believers in Jesus from the love of God. Today: why we are "super-conquerors" over anything that dares try to keep us from that love, even over the power of death itself. Today we find a reason to rejoice.

They're among the most soaring words ever penned...the words the Apostle Paul used to conclude Romans chapter eight. Here he lists all the things that cannot separate us from the love of God. If you're a believer who's treading some deep water right now, and you need some encouragement, you've come to the right place.

For centuries, the sins of Israel were covered temporarily by blood sacrifices in the temple at Jerusalem. This was a picture of a future sacrifice, one that would take away sin forever. That sacrifice was that of Jesus on the cross. Thanks to Him, believers have a certificate of acquittal from the guilt they should rightfully bear. Today, the high price of that acquittal is made clear.

As a monk, Martin Luther would go to confession for hours at a time, trying to be sure his every sin would be forgiven. Did this guarantee him a place in heaven? No, it did not. Certainty only came when he discovered the principle of justification by faith. Confessing sins is fine, but that next sin lies in wait around the corner. Today we see why believers can rejoice in their acquittal before God.

"Will the defendant please rise?" The courtroom is hushed as the judge reads the indictment. Your guilt seems sure. But then a court official steps forward with a certificate of acquittal: a document affirming that the sentence has been carried out...on another person on your behalf. In Romans 8:33, Paul asks "Who shall bring a charge against God's elect? It is God that justifies...."

A death-row inmate faces a grim prospect. His date with execution will soon arrive. He's got nowhere to turn. But sometimes, a governor will commute the sentence, or set him free if new evidence is discovered. In a moment, the inmate's outlook leaps from despair to joy. We all deserve a spiritual death-row sentence. Today we look at another gift God has bestowed on those who trust Christ.
