The Discipline of Worship #3 of 3

August 4, 2010
A lazy athlete is a losing athlete. Only disciplined athletes win. The same is true for any of us running the race of life. The disciplines that bring us victory include the discipline of worship: putting God in His rightful first place in our hearts, and making everything else a distant second place. Today you will hear several practical ways to make worship the center of your life.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. A woman sat near an ancient well, face to face with Jesus. Their discussion turned from physical water to spiritual water, and her journey in the race of life was changed forever as she learned the meaning of true worship. Why it’s vital to worship the God who desires our adoration: the discipline of worship is our focus on today’s broadcast.

The winning athlete is invariably the one who understands discipline, taking the right steps to insure victory. Just as it takes discipline to win at the track, you can be sure it takes discipline to win in the race of life. Today, Dr. Erwin Lutzer begins a series exploring five “Disciplines That Grow Godliness.” Are you ready to get into the real game?

When you give to support your local church, do you wish you could attach strings to your dollars, and control where they go? Some would rather give to high visibility ministries than to help provide for the general needs of their church. Today, Erwin Lutzer tells why letting God supervise the use of the money we give creates a strong base for the many outreaches that our churches accomplish.

Do you enjoy every chance to put something in the offering plate at church?  Some people find offering time troubling.  They may give, but only grudgingly, or, to not appear cheap in the eyes of others.   What’s your reason to contribute?  The Bible tells us that God loves a cheerful giver.  What kind of giver are you?  What kind am I?  Today, we’ll find out.

Some laws are built into the fabric of creation. One is the law of sowing and reaping, well known to all who plant crops. Sow sparingly, and that is all you will reap. Sow generously, and you will get a larger yield. This principle also applies in giving to God’s work. Today we hear a few lessons on finances from the Apostle Paul to the church in ancient Corinth. These lessons are no less valid now than they were then.

How we handle money says an awful lot about who we are. Some of us hoard it, others gladly invest it in God’s work. Sure, the economy may be down. But God is still faithful, and He will honor our choice to put resources where “moth and rust cannot corrupt.” Today we look at a few lessons we can take home from a parable of Jesus about wise money management.

Many point to high-risk investments gone sour that led to the severe downturn in the US and even global economies. Our becoming shrewd managers of money was the point of a parable of Jesus in Luke chapter sixteen. The lessons are clear, we need to use worldly wealth in a way that brings eternal dividends.

Egypt buried its Pharaohs with incredible wealth. It was assumed that they’d need it in the life to come. Are we like this? Some people hold on to their money until their knuckles turn white. It’s only when realizing that we do not own anything that true financial freedom comes. We are only managers of God’s wealth. And investing in His Kingdom brings a guaranteed return beyond our imagination.

It’s just common sense: no one takes a risk in the stock market unless they think the risk is worth the potential gain. Even in times of downturn, the principle of return on investment, or ROI, remains crucial. And when investing in the Kingdom of God, it is no less vital. Today: some lessons on investing the money we have, money that actually belongs to someone else.

Interest rates are time-dependent. The longer your money earns interest, the more it compounds. The widow who put two mites in the temple treasury could not imagine the ultimate sum her gift would draw in the bank of heaven. But God knew, and no doubt, He will reward her for the faith it took to give all she had. How much faith do we have in these uncertain times?
