The Christ of the Bible, Part 1 of 4

September 18, 2012
Major newsmagazines report that Jesus only said 18% of what the Bible says He said. Their conclusion: no miracles, just a man. But the Christ of the Bible is a far-different figure. He changes hearts and lives — as millions can attest. In today’s message we’ll learn why the Bible’s picture of Christ validates its truth and authority.

He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. Most so-called prophets bathe their predictions in mystery and allegory. Few give the names of specific places and people as the Bible does. Nostradamus never predicted the death of a great city the way the Bible tells of ancient Tyre’s judgment. Today we’ll study why fulfilled prophecy means you can trust that the Bible is true — down to the smallest detail.

In clear language, the Bible predicts what will happen hundreds of years before events take place. This is fulfilled prophecy — and fulfilled prophecy is a powerful reason for trusting the Bible to be true and authoritative. Today we’ll hear more examples of how predicted events came to be fact.

In a day of terabytes in processing power, finding hidden codes in the Bible may seem timely. But is this how God validates His word? Pastor Lutzer takes a common-sense approach to the Bible Code issue, and calls us to return to the plain words of God-inspired Scripture.

One of the key reasons for trusting the Bible is its accuracy in predicting the future. Its prophecies have been fulfilled again and again. Yet some point to a Bible “code” as evidence of hidden revelation. Today: the “Bible Code” analyzed, and why it’s not needed to prove the Bible’s divine origin.

Is the Bible historically accurate? Lots of scholars say “no,” even when new findings prove otherwise. The bottom line is that you can trust this book. Running life’s race demands a trustworthy guidebook. Today, we will explore why the Bible is reliable in both historical and in spiritual truth.

Lots of scholars take pot shots at the Bible, claiming it’s not historically accurate. The trouble is, mounting evidence proves otherwise. All it takes is a trip to Israel to verify the uncanny precision of the Bible’s geographical references. The more the Bible is attacked, the better it looks.

Most of us believe what we read in the newspaper. After all, no critical scholars hold seminars to debunk the New York Times. Though they are slow to attack a well-known newspaper, critics are quick to debunk the Bible. And since the Bible is under perennial attack for its accuracy, just how reliable is it? Can it stand up to its critics?

We’ve had the Bible on the witness stand for a few days, and it’s told us over 1,500 times that the Word of the Lord was communicated through its authors. These men spoke with a single voice, although they wrote over a 1,600-year span of time. We now have a choice: either this book is true, or it is the biggest lie ever perpetrated. Which is it?

To gather evidence, courts take testimony from witnesses. To evaluate the claims of the Bible, we’ll put it on the witness stand. As the cross-examination begins, we find a book that claims to speak for God. In fact, it claims God spoke through its authors. Today we will look at the claims the Bible makes for itself.

The Bible was written by 40 authors over a period of 1,600 years — still you can see a clear unity despite the diversity of its authors. And this book makes some remarkable claims for itself. Today, we’ll pause in the race of life long enough to put the Bible on the witness stand and hear its own testimony.
