Pornography: The Soul Defiled #1 of 4

October 27, 2009
There's no denying it. At root, all of us are sexual creatures, with appetites given to us by God to be used as He intended. And since we all have sexual desires, it's easy to be trapped into satisfying those desires outside of God's will by putting sex in the wrong context. Today: a probing look at the damage done by the flood of pornography on the internet and in our media.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. One would think that committed Christians have little chance of becoming alcoholics. But the snare of drinking can tempt anyone. As one drink leads to another, a believer can become chemically dependent, and join the ranks of those attending Alcoholics Anonymous. Christians are not exempt from the deadly snare of drinking and the damage it can do. Today: some final thoughts about alcoholism.

A drink: once in the bloodstream, alcohol messes with your mind and your judgment, and it loosens your moral anchor. Alcohol, in its various forms, is a trap baited with the promise of "the good life." In reality, it can wreck your life. There are lots of reasons to avoid alcohol, and very few reasons to indulge in it. Today: more sobering truth about alcoholism.

"Just one more"...most alcoholics say they can stop drinking whenever they want. Problem is, "whenever" never comes. Christians are not immune from the pull of alcohol, and the chance of a life ruined as a result. Sadly, one destroyed life invariably takes other lives with it. Today: you'll hear more sobering truth about alcoholism: the bondage of drink.

Drunk drivers...every day they kill more of our kids (FX: crash). Alcohol: it's the tolerated drug. Alcohol abuse is costing our society billions in lost productivity, lost relationships, and lost lives. Forget those alluring TV commercials and slick magazine ads. Today: you're going to hear the truth about alcoholism. Stay with us.

Down deep, every gambler knows that the house always wins. Yet, like a drug, gambling turns dabblers into addicts. You can't walk the Las Vegas strip without noting the billions of dollars in shiny real estate...all paid for by tourist gambling losses. Gambling is a trap that can ruin the race of life. Today: why the best defense is to run in the other direction.

Gamblers place their god of chance above the God of the Bible. They trust in dice, the slots, and the Powerball lottery, but God calls all of this idolatry...looking anywhere but to Him for our sustenance. With apologies to those whose churches offer games of chance, we'd like you to know why God and gambling are mutually incompatible. Please stay with us.

The Bible says "work for a living, and trust God." The culture says "gamble for your big break, and trust yourself." Who's right? You've guessed it. God is right. Nearly every dollar gambled is lost, taking money from more needful areas of life. And the few who win find their new wealth just puts them in bondage. Today: four reasons why gambling violates the Bible's teaching.

Casinos know gambling is a lousy deal, except for them. They call it "gaming" instead. Whatever the label, it's bad news. From lottery tickets to video poker, gambling spells big trouble, taking money from those who can least afford it, those hoping for a "big break." We recommend a break all right, a listening break right now to break the gambling habit. Please stay with us.

It's easy to spot greed in others. You can tell when people are lusting after money or other things, you see it in their faces. But the trouble is that often we can't see it in ourselves and that greed has just as solid a foothold on us as in anyone else. So polish up that mirror and get set to take a long look. Today, we learn some tough lessons on how to lose the greed we all share down deep.

Even in a tough economy, it seems the rich keep getting richer, building bigger barns to store all the stuff they're buying. Jesus says those who accumulate money and things might be in for a rude shock. After all, none of us can hitch our U-Hauls to a hearse. Getting a grip on the greed we all share: that's our focus on today's broadcast. Please stay with us.
