November 26, 2013

Sin is at the core of all marriage problems. In our self-focus, we often do not love our mates as we should. Many marriages begin happily but quickly descend into conflict. This is when husband and wife display the latent rebellion that characterizes every human since the first couple. Today we will learn how to apply God’s solution to man’s deepest problem and heal broken relationships.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. Adam and Eve had it made in the Garden of Eden. But they tossed paradise aside, as each of us would have, when they disobeyed God. Like them, we find ways to manipulate each other to meet our own needs, not realizing that meeting our mate’s needs is the real key to marital happiness.  Feelings of rejection set in, as Adam and Eve’s story repeats again and again down through history.

Despite counseling, divorce marks the end of half of American marriages, leaving behind incalculable damage. When the family unit breaks down, culture itself breaks down. Communication breakdowns affect nearly every marriage at one time or another, and this began quite early in history – all the way back to the Garden of Eden.

The family is an endangered species. The very definition of the family is being torn apart.  Fractured, broken, stressed, and dysfunctional are words that can be used to describe this most basic unit of society. It begins when marriages fail.  Today we will take a candid look at the causes of these failures.

Left to ourselves, we’re basically narcissistic. We would much rather meet our own needs than meet the needs of others. In matrimony, two people have to care for each other. This combats the inherent selfishness we all share. In many ways, marriage is a crucible in which character is forged and where happiness is found in pleasing your mate, not yourself.

Anyone who thinks that marriage is the magic door to happiness might want to note that half of all marriages fail today. The resulting carnage of divorce and shattered families leaves a trail of dysfunction for generations. God intended marriage to develop character, not just fulfill sensual desire. Those who opt out of their marriages miss many rewards.

When she comes down the aisle, she is the picture of perfection. He is Prince Charming in a black tuxedo. On their wedding day, few starry-eyed couples realize the searchlight that their marriage will be in revealing the character flaws they both have.  Today we will discuss in more detail that happiness is not the main purpose of marriage.

Is marriage the way to happiness? There is good evidence in the Bible that marriage is designed more to develop character than to ensure a lifetime of bliss. When the rough times come – and they will – what are couples to learn from those experiences?

The central idea of the marriage vow is to commit completely and exclusively to your spouse. To violate this destroys the trust that a working marriage requires, as well as violating the commands of the God who designed marriage in the first place.

Many marriages are on shaky ground. Some see their mates like car models; trade them in when a better one comes along. The underlying issue is covetousness, wanting what you do not have. The Bible has clear directions for making marriages last, and today we will see why living a life of love, purity and honor is the only way to ensure a long and satisfying marriage.

When a young couple stands at the altar, all is love, and the wedding vows come easily.  It is later that reality sets in.
