Lost in a House of Mirrors #2 of 3

July 28, 2009
Remember the fairy tale? A lady, hoping for a positive response, says "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the fairest of them all?" She wanted to hear what we want to hear: that we are really OK, if not beautiful people. So we look for mirrors on our walls to show us what we want to see. The result: self-delusion, and one answer as to why good people do bad things.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. When Timothy McVeigh went to his execution, America was left wondering how a decorated war veteran could've done something so evil. Many ask why seemingly good people turn bad...people who, based on all outward evidence, should act properly. The answer lies in understanding our fundamental nature. If you're willing to face the truth, please stay with us.

Often, when we hear teaching, it all seems theoretical. The hard part is getting hold of ways to make it real in our lives. We've been learning about the armor of God for some time now on Running to Win. Today, we wrap up the series with some key ways to use the Bible the way Jesus did, as a weapon to ward off the devil's attacks, and to protect us from temptation.

The fight against the devil never stops. But Jesus showed us how to defeat him during a forty day fast in the desert. He did what he wants us to do: he used the word of God as an offensive weapon, and forced the devil to flee. Today: more insights on why the Bible is, for us, "The Sword of the Spirit," and how its teachings have the power to deliver us from temptation.

There's no doubt: all who name the name of Christ are in a lifelong battle. We share an enemy who never gets tired. That's why we've been given the armor of God: five pieces for defense, and one weapon with which to strike back at Satan. That weapon is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, a weapon that cuts to the very heart of man, convicting of sin and birthing new life.

The last thing the devil needs is a believer sure of his or her acceptance before God. Such a believer is a threat. When that believer wears God's armor, in particular, "The Helmet of Salvation," Satan has no way to undermine the assurance that God's salvation brings. Today: some crucial teaching on why God wants you and I to know for sure that we are His.

It's tough to not know who your parents are. Many kids are wounded for life by never knowing to whom they belong. It's also tough to grow in the Christian life without the assurance that you are a child of God. Some say salvation can be lost, regained, and then lost again. Today: why it's so crucial to settle the question of knowing you have eternal life.

Many are uncertain if their salvation is a sure thing. Some teach that salvation can be lost if we sin too great. It's tough to go into battle with the devil and not be sure you're on the winning side. God intends for believers to be sure of their eternal futures, and that's why we're told to wear the helmet of salvation as a part of the armor of God. Today: why you and I can be sure of heaven.

We've all heard the phrase, "a mind is a terrible thing to waste." It's also a terrible thing to let fall into Satan's influence. Someone else has said, "What you think, you are." It's vital to protect our minds from the devil's attacks. And the helmet of salvation is just what we need when doubts arise about our status as God's children. Today: how to use yet another piece of the armor of God.

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." By faith we grasp the hand of God. Satan wants to disconnect us from our faith by bombarding us with doubts. The last thing he wants to see is a Christian on fire for the Lord and certain of his or her mission and destiny. Today: how to make the best use of your shield of faith.

In The Lord of the Rings, the evil Grimmer Wormtongue whispers lies into the ears of the King of Rohan. He's just like Satan, who whispers lies into our ears. His goal: to make us ineffective as soldiers in the battle for truth. The shield of faith is what we need when beset with thoughts like "I'm no good...I can't live for God...it's too hard." Today: learning to use your shield.
