Living With Your Passions #3 of 3

It’s dangerous to get too close to a fire. And, to get too close to a possible sexual sin. The price is too high. That’s why the seventh commandment teaches us to avoid all forms of sexual sin. That means faithfulness to the wife or husband God gives us. The result: a life free from the entanglements that can stop us in our tracks.

Your church needs you…it needs you out on life’s racetrack, running alongside the other members to get the job done together. The challenge for the new year is “get involved.” That’s what Esther did at a crucial point in the history of the Jewish people. She got involved even at great personal risk, as must we to face the daunting challenges of 2011.

Most of our choices don’t affect world history. But sometimes God puts us in situations where they can, and do. To save her people from extinction, Esther faced possible execution to beg the king of Persia to rescind a royal edict. She did not try to “pass the buck.” She knew that, at that key moment, “the buck stopped here.” With us.

At year-end, we’re all conscious of the passing of time. We wish we had more, but the sand keeps running through the hourglass. At crucial times, great leaders arise, often from common roots. They find themselves at the vortexes of history, and are called upon to make momentous choices. Today we learn about one such leader, a woman named Esther.

The week after Christmas: another dash to the mall exchanging gifts for better gifts. But there were no malls in Bethlehem long ago; no lights, no friends. Indeed, Christmas had a humble beginning. This is a special edition of Running to Win....helping us understand what the real cost of Christmas was, especially for Mary the mother of Jesus.

December 25 was not Jesus’ actual birthday, but it’s the date set aside long ago for us to honor that birth. For Mary His mother, that birth began a long period of pain and sorrow, a personal toll we seldom consider during this time of year. This is a special edition of Running to Win....helping us understand the real cost of Christmas.

Tomorrow we celebrate the central event in human history...the coming of Jesus Christ to live among us. But while Christians can now enjoy the benefits of the Savior’s birth, life, death and resurrection, there was one person who felt great pain when He came. This is a special Christmas Eve edition of Running to Win....helping us understand the real cost of Christmas to the mother who had to later watch her son be put to death.

We can be so deep in bondage to sin that we don’t even realize it.  That’s why we need the truth to set us free. Jesus not only knows the truth, He is the truth, and He wants to set you free from being a slave to sin. That’s the great liberation we all need, made possible only because God the Father sent the gift of His Son into the world. Please stay with us.

Real freedom is not doing whatever you want, whenever you want. Rather, it’s doing the will of God. That’s freedom without regrets. To run life’s race, we need to know where we’re going, and Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Freedom starts with truth, and truth is embodied in Jesus Christ. At Christmas we remember that Truth was born into the world, and that Truth can set us free.

When Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free,” He made possible the ultimate kind of freedom. All real freedom has its roots in truth, and Christ said “I am the truth.” For all among us trapped in addictions and oppression, Christ’s gift of liberty is ours to take. Today: a look at truth: the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.  Please stay with us.

The prophet Isaiah wrote, “The Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor…to bind up the brokenhearted to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners.” Today, we’ll learn about the last of four great gifts God gave us in sending His son to earth so long ago. Thanks for joining us for another Christmas edition of Running to Win.
