Modern armies don't conduct warfare the way ancient Israel took Jericho. You don't march around and shout...you attack. But march and shout they did, because God's purpose was to prove to them that He and only He was the reason for their victory. As Zechariah would later write: "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord."

The enemy had it all: a walled city, superior arms. But Israel had God...Jericho didn't stand a chance. At Gilgal, God through Joshua prepared His people for a great day of victory yet to come. Sometimes life's race brings us to pivotal points of proving God's faithfulness. For Joshua, that point was a seemingly impregnable city, and that day was now.

Some believers never run life's race. They sit by the side of the road, feeling left out of what God had for them. This is a mistake. Being morose is no fun. Our attitude makes a big difference, and it's something we can change. The book of Joshua teaches us to get up and get going: there is a future, and there is a hope. On the racetrack of life, many of us get weary, needing renewal during our desert times. Only then can we run again. We don't know what's ahead around the next bend in the road. But God does: He knows what we need before we get there. At Gilgal, God taught Joshua and his people some crucial lessons: lessons we need to hear today to face the challenges of tomorrow.

Are you in the wilderness, spiritually? Has your vision of God dimmed? You need to stay tuned for a way out of the desert. Joshua needed a fresh cleansing from God, and a fresh vision of God, before the battles in Canaan could begin. Do you face tough times in the days ahead? Like Joshua, you can face them with a clean heart and a renewed sense of God's presence.

The race of life is a struggle from the first sprint to the last lap. Each of us needs the word of God for strength to face the battle. And that means meditation and study in the Scriptures each and every day. Most of us know that life's not a bed of roses. We face conflict and struggle every step of the way toward the goal line. Ancient Israel: they didn't find life a picnic either. Joshua's conquest of Canaan, city by city, took time and effort. For us to see God's intentions for our lives come to pass: that takes time and effort as well. And it's vital to "get started right."

Jesus said, "I am the Vine, you are the branches. If you abide in Me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit...." As we run the race of life, let's not forget that the world sees the fruit, not the branches. In order to win people to Jesus, we must be fruit-bearing Christians, or else the cross will be of no effect. It's not what we say, or who we vote for, it's what we do.

If you ask most Christians, "Do you want to be like Jesus?" they'd probably say "of course." Until they find out what that really means. Jesus renounced His privileges and humbled Himself to the point of permitting His own death. Unless we do the same, we will never reach the lost floating on the sea of relativism around us.
