Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. "Not my fault!" These days it's common to blame everyone else for our conflicts...everyone except the sinner within. James tells Christians that conflicts come from inner desires at war with the purposes of God. There's no point in "pointing the finger" elsewhere...our troubles begin...within. Get used to it: your life is a battleground, and Satan wants to win.

Tension...quarrels...fights...at one time or another, all of us find ourselves in conflict with someone else. It's no fun. Even Christians have a dark side...desires within that can snare us on the race of life. The Bible says, "Take heed, lest you fall." Any of us can tumble off the spiritual mountaintop, because the war within each believer is very real.

The Christian life: joy, assurance, and deep satisfaction. But it's also a life of suffering. Can these co-exist? We'll come full-circle in our series on unanswered prayer, and then, find ourselves content with the God to Whom we pray.

We Americans have short attention spans. We're used to soundbite news, fast food, and immediate solutions to problems. However, many people pray for years, asking God for deliverance from appalling situations. The answers never seem to come. So, faith is not getting what we want...faith says we accept what God gives us. Please stay tuned.

All around us are people with long term health issues...issues that seem to have no resolution, short of divine healing. But when these people pray for healing, the answer appears to be an ongoing "no." They hear the verse, "my strength is made perfect in weakness," and sadly wish that their answer had been "here's the healing you seek." Are you disappointed with God today? Stay with us.

When Christians find themselves in a time of need, they naturally pray for God to provide. Sometimes the answer is "no...." How we then react is crucial. We must come to understand that even the "no" answers are still answers, and that God is fully aware of our needs and what is best for us. Today: why our faith can grow even when the answer is no.

When we earnestly pray for something we believe to be in God's will, and find the answer to be "no," what do we do? First, remember that you're in good company. The Apostle Paul had a great need...he sought the Lord repeatedly for relief. But the answer was "No, My grace is sufficient for you, My strength is made perfect in weakness." Today: more about what to do when the answer is "no."

It's tough taking "no" for an answer. As children, we all felt those "no's," when our parents chose to deny our requests. As children of God, there are times when the answer to a prayer of ours is a clear "no." We have a choice: these times can either make us resentful, or, they can increase our faith. Today: how to react and respond when God denies a petition we make to Him.

When it seems our nation is ripping away from its moorings, we as believers need to understand the prophet Habakkuk. This prophet lived in a time of turmoil not unlike our own. His small book in the Old Testament is a remarkable one-way dialog with God, a dialog that reveals the prophet's own journey of faith from frustration to the calm assurance that God is in charge.
