Getting Prayer Right, Part 2 of 3 (You Can't Redo Life)

November 2, 2016

Jesus told a parable about a man who needed bread. The man went to a friend at midnight to get some bread, and because of his boldness, he got bread.  Jesus teaches us to be bold in praying to the Father, saying, “Ask, and it will be given to you.”

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It takes several things to bring a person to faith in Christ. It requires seed, which is the Word of God. It requires a sower, a believer communicating his or her faith.  And it requires receptive soil, something only God can provide.

When the seed of the Gospel is sown, it can land in receptive soil, or, in soil that will not allow the seed to germinate. Today we learn more lessons on how some seed lands where its hearers will accept it and be fruitful.

Jesus compared the spread of the Gospel to the way a sower spreads seed on the ground. The seed only grows if God gives the increase, as Paul wrote to the Corinthian church. Let’s look closer at the sower, along with the soils into which the seed is sown.

The parables of Jesus use real-life situations to communicate spiritual truths. Hearers received illustrations of farmers, servants, prodigal sons, and tenders of vineyards. Let’s journey through a series on the meaning of ten of these parables, beginning with the sower and his seed.

Many marriages begin happily, but then descend into conflict. That’s when husband and wife reveal the inner rebellion that’s marked every human since that first couple. How can we apply God’s solution to humanity’s deepest problem, and heal our broken relationships?

Adam and Eve tossed paradise aside when they disobeyed God. Like them, we manipulate each other to meet our own needs, not realizing that meeting our mate’s needs is the real key to marital happiness. Feelings of rejection multiply as Adam and Eve’s story repeats throughout history.

When the family unit breaks down, culture itself breaks down. Communication failures affect nearly every marriage, and this began quite early in history. In fact, we have a record of it in the Garden of Eden. Let’s look at the damage sin can do.

The real endangered species today is the family. Fractured, broken, stressed, dysfunctional–all these words describe a crisis in the most basic unit of society. This crisis begins when marriages fail.
October 20, 2016
In matrimony, two people promise to care for each other. This combats the inherent selfishness we all possess. In many ways, marriage is a crucible in which character is forged, and where happiness is found in pleasing your mate, not yourself.
