Finding God in the Wasteland, Part 3 of 3 (The Invisible World)

April 30, 2013

God does not limit Himself to church buildings when He wishes to speak to His children. A man named Jacob found that out when God came to him when he was sleeping on the ground using a rock for a pillow. In a dream, he learned of God’s plans for him and his nation. That place became sacred and Jacob called it “the gate of heaven.” Today: how each of us can meet God in the very same way.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. You might remember a Sunday School song called, “We are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder.” So, what’s that ladder all about? Jacob had a dream in which angels were ascending and descending a ladder that went from Earth to Heaven.  Today, we’ll find out what that ladder means, and how God used that imagery to bridge the gap between our visible world and His invisible one.

We live in a visible world, but around us is an equally real invisible world. Sometimes the two intersect very tangibly. God may intervene supernaturally when we least expect it. That happened many times in both the Old and New Testaments. In today’s message, God speaks to a man in a dream, and reveals that man’s future destiny. This divine intersection is often called “Jacob’s ladder.”

The Bible tells of a life beyond this life—a life where all the wrongs of this world are made right. That world is, for now, part of an invisible world: the world of the spirit, the world of heaven and hell, God, angels and demons. Christians have to live in both worlds, and it’s our job to get ready for the world to come.

The invisible world. Paul calls it “an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison.” A world we cannot yet see that awaits all who believe in Christ.  In this message, learn more on how superior that world is when compared to any trial we could ever experience in this world.

Our eyes can only process a narrow range of the energy called light. We can’t see infrared or ultraviolet. Many things are very real, even though we can’t see them. Life on Earth is not limited to what our five senses can detect. There’s an entire world out there that exists in the realm of the spirit. Today: a series begins that tells about that invisible world and how we relate to it.

It might be said that the church in America has never been as rich in wealth, while at the same time as poor in spiritual power. This indictment was handed down by Jesus to the ancient church at Laodicea. He may have had our day in mind when He said, “Because you say I’m rich…you don’t know that you are wretched, miserable, blind and naked.”  So what remedy did He give them?

No one likes lukewarm food or beverages. Hot or cold is much better. Jesus said as much when evaluating the lukewarm Laodicean church in Revelation 3. But His tough love included a gracious offer—a way for them to regain their lost fervor. His rebuke and chastening would lead to renewal and power for them, and even for us.

Some Bible scholars see a progression as Jesus evaluates seven successive churches in the book of Revelation. They see the passing of history, with each church representing an era of time. If this is the case, we may be living in the last era—part of a church Jesus says He will spew out of his mouth. Is your church spiritually hot, or, like the one at Laodicea, merely lukewarm?

When churches check themselves against those listed in Revelation 2 and 3, there’s one church they want to be like. The church at Philadelphia earned high marks from Jesus for its faithfulness and its vision. They persevered, they kept His Word, and they never denied His name. Take a look at the importance of vision, and going through the open doors Jesus sets before us.

In what is now Turkey, the ancient church at Philadelphia earned a commendation from Jesus for its faithfulness to His name. In today’s world, faithful churches are growing even in hostile places—churches about which Jesus says, “I’ve set before you an open door, and no one can shut it.” Some even come to faith in Christ through dreams which lead them to seek out God’s Word.
