Family Feuds: Seeing God in Injustice #1 of 4

May 29, 2009
Families can be torn apart by feuds: long-running animosities usually caused by someone's past unjust actions. Whether due to some imagined or real hurt, or to an inheritance wrongly divided, some feuds go on for generations. Conflict becomes a way of life. Unless the cycle is broken, hatred can consume blood relatives. Is there a way out?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Reconciliation between estranged brothers is very sweet. Jacob went out of his way to make things right with Esau. Having cheated Esau out of his birthright, Jacob had to greatly humble himself before facing his older brother. Today: lessons from Genesis chapter 33 on putting an end to warfare within the family.

It would be nice if all disputes could be resolved, all conflicts reconciled. In the real world, that's not always possible. In some cases, resolution is not an option, and we have to cut all ties with those causing our conflict. Sometimes, we have to shut the door and set the deadbolt. Today: guidance from the life of Jacob on when and where to bar the gate.

Eliphaz told Job, "Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward." And trouble is what two brothers had. Jacob and Esau are classic examples of how different two children can be. Like in any family, conflict was almost inevitable. Jacob the younger connived the birthright of Esau the elder, and the lifelong battle began. Today: lessons from the family of Isaac.

We all recoil from stories of killers who slay without conscience or remorse, and then complain if they're not treated properly. In their twisted minds, these people have a double standard of behavior. They're like Cain of old, who had no sorrow for killing Abel, but was quite worried that someone might kill him. Today: understanding the mind of the self-absorbed.

Whether it's fair or not, most families have a favorite son or daughter. In the eyes of siblings, the favorite gets all the breaks. Cain thought Abel got all the breaks. When God approved of Abel's sacrifice, and rejected Cain's, deep seeds of jealousy were sown, later reaped in a harvest of vengeance and murder. Today: more on the tragic life of Cain, who typifies many who feel rejected.

Ever met a destroyer...someone who can inflict tremendous hurt without feeling any guilt? Sadly, destroyers are everywhere. They're really tuned in to their own pain, but are incapable of caring whether their victims are in pain or not. Destroyers are nothing new...in fact, the first destroyer was born into mankind's first family. Today: we'll learn what motivates destroyers.

Trying to predict all the effects of being offended is like predicting where all the waves will go when you toss a rock into a pond. When we react to an offense, some collateral damage is very likely. Today: join us for an eye-opening look into the unintended consequences of harboring an offense rather than seeking reconciliation.

In Spain, bullfighters wave red flags to get the bulls to charge, thus we say we're "seeing red" when really angry. And nothing gets us madder than being offended by another person. When someone does us wrong, we can lose our focus on everything except the rage we feel within. Today: more lessons on the roots of rage, and how to handle it.

It's instinctive to recoil from pain. Just watch what happens when you stick a friend with a pin. But then there's inner pain. Some conflict in life is inevitable, but when others cause our conflicts, it's hard to escape that pain. Something inside each of us cries out for justice. Today, we're beginning a series to help us deal with the wrongs that others inflict.

It may be that church in America has never been as rich in wealth, while at the same time as poor in spiritual power. This indictment was handed down by Jesus to the ancient church at Laodicea. He may have had our day in mind when he said, "Because you say I'm rich...you don't know that you are wretched, miserable, blind and naked." What's his remedy?
