There is a costly war in Afghanistan. But there is a bigger war going on in our culture, with many more casualties. There are forces active today that want to destroy your kids and redefine marriage. A rising tide of media filth, immorality and political correctness threatens the foundations of our society. Today: get set for some alarming news.

Like water to a thirsty man, the grace of God can flow like a river to heal families torn by strife and bitterness. If your family is in trouble, it’s not too late to cleanse the wounds, and let healing begin. Even in messy situations, God can work mighty miracles of reconciliation. Today we see how God blessed King David, an ineffective father like many of us.

Bitterness can last a long time. Once begun, it can infect others, causing generations to hate future generations. King David let bad situations fester in his family until the poison burst out in civil strife. Let’s resolve to learn from the mistakes of an otherwise great man, and deal with unresolved matters long before they explode.

“Do as I say, not as I do.” Some parents try valiantly to raise their kids to behave better than they do. Good luck. Families are systems. Like chains, they break at the weakest link. And when that link is dad, the family is in serious trouble. That happened with King David of Israel, a mighty warrior in battle, but an uninvolved father at home. Today we look at a few lessons from a dysfunctional family.

As the wise proverb tells us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Israel’s King David was a great leader, a noted military commander, a “man after God’s own heart,” and a lousy father. Today: the Bible’s honest portrayal of David, and the great damage done by his failure as a dad.

Like facing the mess after a hurricane, the road for a child recovering from abuse within a family is a daunting task. Help is vital and is coming your way on today’s broadcast. Too many families are hiding a destructive secret: sexual or physical abuse between adults and children. Today we learn the way back to wholeness through the grace of God.

The depth of sin to which people can sink is beyond fathoming. Sexual abuse in a religious home? Yes: it happens. The family is in trouble. Both external influences and our internal bent toward sin conspire to wreak havoc on those we love, or claim to love. Abuse within families is epidemic. Today: how to deal with the one secret people will do anything to keep.
October 20, 2010
Why would a man ever abuse his own wife? How could someone knowingly and intentionally scar a son or daughter for life? The root causes can be complex, as can be the ways the abuser goes about carrying out his abuse. Today: some of the personality types that practice abuse in their own families, and how to recognize the symptoms early on.

There’s a cancer eating away at all too many families, something kept carefully hidden to avoid shame and public disgrace. To an alarming degree, abuse in all its forms: sexual, psychological, and physical, is taking place between parents, children and near relatives. Today: facing up to the dark secret that destroys family after family, and finding the way back to healing.

Some of us had bad fathers. But unless we are reconciled with them, we won’t be able to stop the cycle of family breakdown. When it comes to family life, the Bible shows us both the good and the bad in the lives of kings and commoners alike. As dads, we can avoid the mistakes our fathers made if we make peace with them, and then resolve to live godly lives as examples for our own kids.
