Come and See His Empty Tomb, Part 1 of 2 (Come and See Jesus)

April 6, 2015

Death is everyone’s unavoidable fate, due to the legacy of the sins committed by Adam and Eve. But believers cling to the promise of Jesus, “I am the resurrection and the life…he that believes in Me, though he may die, yet shall he live.”

Jesus faced untold agony in a place called Gethsemane. Knowing what awaited Him, and praying until blood drops hit the ground, He finally said to His Father, “Not my will, but Thine be done.” The great transaction would now take place.

Gethsemane lies on the Mount of Olives facing the Old City of Jerusalem. Here, Jesus spent a night in agonized prayer before being nailed to a cross outside the city wall. His task: to drink the cup of suffering for you and for me. What does this mean?

The legacy we inherit from our Master includes suffering. To walk with Jesus means that we must walk with Him in Gethsemane. Here a decision was reached that made salvation possible for billions of believers yet to be born.

It’s one thing to have strong faith in God when the sun’s shining. It’s quite another when dark storms strike. A boat loaded with prisoners were sailing to Rome when their vessel sank in gale force winds. And had it not been for the courage of Paul, also a prisoner, all would have been lost.

There’s great terror being caught in a storm at sea. You fear that the deep will become your grave. Paul was on a ship taking him to Rome. Faced with sinking, his courageous actions saved the crew and fellow prisoners.

Paul was determined to go to Rome despite knowing it would be a one-way trip. He’s end up taking the Gospel to high government officials, but while in route, a stormy shipwreck would slow his journey.

When the Holy Spirit knocks at the heart’s door, some will answer the door and believe in Christ. Others will refuse to answer. Still others will procrastinate. Governor Felix had put Paul off for what he called “a more convenient time.” Later, King Herod Agrippa also dismissed the apostle’s message.

Paul was on the way to Rome, knowing he faced almost certain death. On his way there, he shared the Gospel in the heart of the world’s dominant empire. Then he pled his case before Rome’s king, seizing the moment to make sure the Gospel was understood.

Paul knew certain death awaited him in Rome. But it wouldn’t happen before he brought the Gospel to as many as possible. Paul was taken from place to place before being sent to the capital. And with him went the power of the Holy Spirit, convicting of sin and birthing new life in those who believed.

What do you do with a man like the Apostle Paul? Roman leaders punted his case back and forth for two years. Paul appealed to Caesar, and ended up in a Caesarea prison. Eventually a new governor appeals to Rome’s king in Palestine, Herod Agrippa.
