A Faith That Risks, Part 3 (A Faith That Survives the Fire)

June 4, 2014

The rewards of our faith are not primarily found in this life. In the life to come, God bestows rewards for faithfulness. Like the heroes of faith in Hebrews 11, we need to set our sights on heaven, realizing that, then, this life’s pain will be worth it all.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. When our faith in God is genuine, it causes us to make choices in God’s favor. We willingly take the risk of alienating those around us when we choose God’s way over that of the world. That’s what Moses did, as we read in Hebrews 11.

Some people claim to have faith, yet their lives show little evidence of it. Others are willing to take risks to live out their faith. Today, we focus on this kind of faith, the kind that will survive when times of testing come.

Before Jesus raised Lazarus, He waited four days before displaying His power in calling his friend from the grave. Jesus specializes in giving new life to those dead in their sins and separated from God.

Jesus used miracles to teach lessons. Perhaps His greatest lesson involved Lazarus.  First, He allowed a sick friend to die. Then, He raised him from the dead to show that He is indeed “the resurrection and the life.”

Our greatest fear is death, and our greatest pain is when loved ones die. A friend’s death caused Jesus to weep. In a display of power and glory that shook creation, Jesus cried out, “Lazarus, come forth!”

One thing we can learn from the healing of a man born blind is that God’s purpose is bigger than we can imagine. Through this miracle, Jesus brought spiritual sight to the spiritually blind, and blindness to those who thought they could see.
May 27, 2014
Jesus healed a blind man’s eyes. His works of healing were complete. “Once I was blind, but now I can see.” Can the same be said for the miracles of televangelists?
May 26, 2014
People should have rejoiced – a man born blind received his sight. Yet this miracle caused more controversy than celebration. Human nature was on display, and a great miracle divided people into factions based on their preconceptions.

Why does God allow some people to be born with severe disabilities? Some who face the race of life do so without sight, without working limbs or with other impairments.
May 22, 2014
Do severe trials mean you are out of God’s will? Not always. Jesus sent the disciples onto a storm-tossed sea. God uses storms to mold our character, leading us into the tempest to teach what cannot be taught in comfort.
