Jesus said "Father, forgive them" as He was being crucified. Some wonder: does this mean that everyone, everywhere is forgiven? We know from the Bible that the death of Christ on the cross provides an atonement for sin. "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." While dying, Jesus asks God to pardon His enemies. Extending forgiveness to someone who offends you is one thing. But forgiving your executioners is far different. Here the Son of God exhibits the heart of God in stark clarity. Can any of us comprehend this kind of compassion?

Hidden in the counsels of God are all the reasons why He sent Jesus to the cross. Christ's wounds paid a great debt, and the Bible associates those wounds with our healing in Isaiah chapter 53. Seeing such love, we stand in reverence, wonder, and worship. We long to know how we can rightly respond to a God who would go so far to restore us to Himself.

Jesus suffered untold pain on the cross. His blood flowed for you and me, from wounds bearing witness of love. His wounds and His death marked the bill of sin "paid in full" for all who would believe and receive His forgiveness. No event before or since is as crucial for the human race as those six hours on a Roman cross under a darkened sky.

Isaiah declared, "He was wounded for our transgressions..." Indeed, Jesus was mortally wounded on the cross. The Bible reveals this truth: although these wounds were inflicted by Roman soldiers and approved by Jewish leaders, in actual fact God Himself was the One behind the crucifixion of His own Son.

The cross of Christ is history's central event. That amazing sacrifice is what makes salvation possible. We will never plumb the depths of God's love as shown on that fateful day. But we must come to grips with what happened on that cross. Let's begin by listening to the seven cries Jesus uttered before giving up His spirit.

The Apostle Paul said that Jesus was "declared to be the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead." If we trust Christ for salvation, that empty tomb in Jerusalem is a promise that the tombs you and I shall occupy will one day be empty as well. Death is the last enemy to be destroyed, and the resurrection of Jesus is proof that the grave is not our final home.

Every day the newspapers carry fresh obituaries...reminding us that one day our names will appear there as well. Death is everyone's unavoidable fate, the legacy of the first sin committed by Adam and Eve, but believers cling to the promise of Jesus, "I am the resurrection and the life, he that believes in me, though he may die, he shall live."

Self-determination is thought of as a great American distinctive. We're free to pursue our dreams, wherever they may lead. But believers' dreams must pass through God's hands. Jesus faced untold agony in a place called Gethsemane. Knowing what awaited Him, and praying until blood drops hit the ground, He finally said to His Father, "Not my will, but Thine be done."

It is still a peaceful setting, as pilgrims meditate on the great transaction that took place in this ancient garden. Gethsemane lies on the Mount of Olives facing the Old City of Jerusalem. Here, Jesus spent a night in agonized prayer before being nailed to a cross outside the city wall. His task was to drink the cup of suffering for you and for me. What does this mean?
