Witnessing for Christ, Part 2 of 2 (The Legacy of a Converted Man)

February 23, 2016

When you stand on Mars Hill in Athens, you’re standing where history happened. Paul the Apostle stood on that same rock, telling philosophers of his day about the true God. They were the intellectual cream of the crop, but in Paul they heard a message unlike any other.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. After reaching Greece, Paul became a fearless witness for Christ in a pagan culture. He explained the true God to the high-minded philosophers of that day. Paul is a role model as to how to confront the world with the gospel.

Paul wrote to Philippian believers from prison in Rome. His counsel: believe in Jesus and suffer for His sake. Many people like the Christian life, but they cringe at the suffering part. Rather, let us share in the sufferings of Christ.

Like salmon swimming upstream, living the Christian life is going against the flow of culture. You can’t help but make enemies. Suffering for Christ is not a popular topic, but it is a part of what believers face around the world. How did Paul face suffering?

You would never find a more unlikely convert to the Christian faith. Saul was intent on capturing and killing as many believers as possible. But one day that all changed, when this Pharisee found himself blinded by the light.

We’re all susceptible to moral sin. And with the internet, we’re more vulnerable than ever. Our entire culture is sinking into a pit of moral decay. The issue is serious, and it demands a radical solution. Jesus himself offers us words on dealing with impurity.

There’s a good reason why the Bible tells us to guard our hearts. We must consider the mind of a sex addict to see what leads someone there, and then prescribe steps we should take to prevent being addicted to explicit images.

The Bible bluntly says, “Touch not the unclean thing.” In the midst of our technological age which is filled with sensuality, we must take bold steps and make choices that honor God. It matters where we scroll, swipe, type, or click, and we must choose each day to avoid sexual sin.

Christians are torn. Either abandon technology we can’t live without and become isolated from the culture, or risk exposure to violence and sexual images while trying to engage the world we live in. God speaks to us through 2 Corinthians 6.

Many believers are bound in moral sins, sins made easy by anonymous internet access to pornography. Only the truth of God’s Word will convince us to make right choices rather than follow a slippery slope into sexual sin.
