Why Thanksgiving Changes Everything, Part 2 of 2 (Single Sermon)

November 28, 2013

Being thankful should not be limited to Thanksgiving Day. Believers are commanded to “give thanks in everything,” all the time. Some will say, “Do you mean I am to be thankful for calamity?” Today, we will sharpen our focus on why it is that we can, and must, be thankful, and how we can rejoice no matter what our circumstances are.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. The Pilgrims could not have imagined the spreads most Americans will sit down to on this Thanksgiving Day.  What a feast! The Bible tells us “in everything give thanks.”  Does this mean being thankful for illness or loss? Does it mean being grateful for having no job? The Bible’s command to be thankful is appropriate, even when it doesn’t always make sense to us.

When someone attacks you for your faith, what should be your best response?  Arguing usually goes nowhere. We are told to wear the armor of God and wield the sword of the Spirit, which the Bible says is the Word of God. It is not just a book; it is alive, powerful, and the means God uses to open closed hearts to the gospel.

There is no doubt that all who proclaim the Name of Christ are in a lifelong battle.  We have an enemy who never gets tired. That is why we have been given the armor of God: five pieces for self-defense, and one weapon with which we can strike back at Satan. That weapon is the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, a weapon that can cut to the very heart of man, convicting sin and birthing new life.

It is tough to not know who your parents are. Many kids are wounded for life by never knowing to whom they belong. It is also tough to grow in the Christian life without the assurance that you are a child of God. Some say salvation can be lost, regained, and then lost again.  Today we will discuss why it is so crucial to settle the question of whether or not you have eternal life.

We have all heard the phrase, “a mind is a terrible thing to waste.”  It’s also a terrible thing to let fall into Satan’s influence. Someone else has said, “What you think, you are.”  It is vital to protect our minds from the devil’s attacks. The helmet of salvation is just what we need when doubts arise about our status as God’s children.  Today we will learn how to use this piece of the armor of God.

There are times in the life of every believer when things get so bad that we doubt God’s care. That is when Satan strikes. Flaming arrows come our way, challenging our faith and making us question whether God is truly good. Today we will talk about why you and I need the shield of faith to deflect these missiles of doubt, and, how we are to use this piece of spiritual armor.

Flaming arrows is the image the Bible uses when describing the attacks of the devil on believers who want to live for God. There is a defense Christians can use to ward off Satan’s fiery darts. We can protect ourselves with what the Apostle Paul calls “the shield of faith.” Today, we will learn how to use this piece of the armor of God, and see how a strong faith can block arrows of doubt.

Taking the gospel of peace to a world under Satan’s dominion is a sure way to find yourself immediately at war. The devil sets his sights on any believer obeying the command to take to gospel to another person. Only by having the peace of God within can the believer withstand the attacks of Satan.

Inner calm is what we want when everything around us is a swirl of conflict. In trying times, peace is what we need. And peace is much more than just a sense of well-being.  Its basis is what Paul calls “the gospel of peace,” good news that gives us assurance of a future that transcends our daily stress. Are you experiencing the peace of God today?

It’s one thing to believe that the righteousness of Jesus can be credited to our account before a holy God, but it is another to put that knowledge to use when we find ourselves sinning every day. The devil keeps accusing us of falling short of God’s standards.
