When You Make a Selfish Choice #1 of 2

June 23, 2010
A mistake in the moral area has long term consequences. King David made a big mistake with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite. A story he’d wished could stay private got public real fast, and a king of Israel was in serious trouble.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions.   “…shame on you, if you fool me once, shame on me if you fool me twice, should've known better but I didn't, and I can't go back….” That’s the songwriter’s take on broken vows. What to do when you’ve been taken in, is the problem Joshua faced with the Gibeonites. His response is an example of how we should react when we find out we have been had by making a reckless promise.

Here’s a question, are you a person of integrity? Meaning can people count on you to do what you say you’re going to do? Failing to keep promises marks any of us as deficient in character. God says, “It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it.” Today we will take a look at the importance of keeping our word, it reveals personal integrity.

When you make a bad choice, often you must live with the consequences. But even then, you need never lose all hope. The children of Israel chose to not believe the report delivered by spies sent to check out the land. As a result, God said they would all die in the desert except for Joshua and Caleb. Tough consequences, but there was mercy and grace mixed with this judgment.

Why do we make poor choices? There are many reasons.   Sometimes we sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the immediate. Whatever the reason, all of us make some bad decisions. The challenge then is what to do about them. Our current series brings hope to those of us who’ve made choices that we would give anything to change. Today we hear lessons from the people of Israel during the conquest of Canaan.

When you hear the word “Eden,” you think of an idyllic paradise with no worries, the ideal place to live a carefree life. But the real Eden didn’t stand a chance. When Adam and Eve sinned, paradise turned sour, and man’s fate was sealed. Life would be hard now that paradise was lost, and were it not for the grace of a redeeming God, there would have been no hope for our rebellious race.

Hindsight is 20-20.   Anyone can see the results of a choice after it’s made, but it’s more difficult to make a decision with the future results in mind. What do you do when you’ve made a bad call, and have to live with the consequences? The Bible has many examples of this, and today we begin a series called “Making the Best of a Bad Decision”. We’ll learn that there is hope, even if we have really messed things up.

Ever wonder if your coming to faith in Christ was an accident, just coincidence, or maybe just a good choice on your part? Not a chance. “Salvation is of the Lord,” the Bible says, and that includes the circumstances of your conversion. In the book of Acts, God went to unusual lengths to get the gospel to a needy Ethiopian. And He did the same for you and for me.

These days, people look to their smart phones, netbooks or laptops to find out what’s next on their busy schedules. Keeping appointments is crucial for success in business. But God has a heavenly calendar for His people. Today we will see how the Holy Spirit sets the agenda for a child of God.

While we focus every day on the here and now, eternity awaits us. Those who know Christ have a glorious future ahead of them. The doorway to heaven is the death of the believer. When Stephen was martyred, he had a vision of Jesus welcoming him home. For those who fear death, be encouraged, this can be your vision as well.

Most of us invest heavily in our futures. Savings accounts and retirement plans give us comfort for those “golden years. But wise believers know that the real future lies in the hands of God, not in any plans we can make. Like the martyr, Stephen, our ultimate destiny lies beyond this life. Today you will hear about the glorious eternal future ahead for a child of God.
