When the Answer Is Disguised, Part 1 of 2

July 20, 2012
Sometimes, we ask God for things we clearly need and we seem to be left with no answer. But then, out of left field, another answer comes. Prayer is something of a mystery. We are commanded to ask in faith, without doubting. The answers sometimes come from unexpected directions, even unrelated to what we asked for. Today we’ll see another perspective on the matter of unanswered prayer — answers in disguise.

He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. Most of us get antsy when having to wait more than five minutes at McDonald’s. Think of Abraham in the Old Testament. God gave him promises that wouldn’t come to pass for hundreds of years. Abraham died before seeing any of them fulfilled. Next time you feel like God is a bit slow in answering your prayers, remember that His scale of time is bigger than yours, because He has a larger agenda.

We are creatures of the clock. Waiting means minutes, hours, and days. But when we get into months and years — that’s tough to take. When we pray for something, we hope for a quick response from God. But God has His own clock, not always in sync with ours. How do we handle prayers that, to us, are time critical, when the answers seem to be anything but?

If we could see things the way God sees them, we’d understand why some of our prayers seem to go unanswered. When we pray, the purpose is bigger than we realize. For us, getting the answer is all-consuming. For God, developing our characters is the real objective. Today we’ll discuss coming to grips with what to do when our prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling.

A parent is in danger of losing a child. And even with urgent prayer, the child dies. Where was God? When prayer isn’t answered the way we’d like, many simply give up and stop praying. We may question God’s promises, His intentions, or even His character. If your prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, this series of messages by Pastor Lutzer will help you see things in a new light.

Many of us look back on our lives and see the damages done by poor choices. Can we fix them? Wouldn’t it be great if the decisions we make tomorrow could be wise ones, made with the counsel of God, and choices that enriched lives? In today’s message, Pastor Lutzer gives us key steps to take in order to make tomorrow’s choices better than the ones we made yesterday.

Sometimes our bad choices only affect us personally. But more often, they impact the lives of those around us. Bad decisions bring consequences, often in the lives of those close to us. How do we unravel the messes we make because we chose our own path, not the one God wanted us to follow? Or what about the messes we made before coming to Christ? Today we’ll have a discussion about handling messes like these.

As America’s economy keeps sagging, many hope that a get-rich-quick scheme will help them save their homes and futures. Most of us will never win a lottery. But all of us face the temptation to use easy credit. Building up mountains of debt, we bury ourselves too deep to dig out. What do you do when you’ve made a bad decision about money?

The fabric of society is ripping apart. Half of all marriages end in divorce, even among Christians. Too many people treat divorce as a way to handle having made a bad decision in choosing a marriage partner. It’s crucial that we learn to see the hand of God even in our bad choices, and find His grace to be sufficient to keep us on track.

Hindsight is 20-20. Anyone can see the results of a decision after it is made. It’s tough to predict the future. What do you do when you make a bad call and have to live with it? The Bible has many examples for us, and today we begin a series of discussions on Making the Best of a Bad Decision. There is hope, even if we’ve really messed things up.

Imagine this scene, the worship team stops singing, the screens go dark, the audience fidgets…“hey, what’s going on here?” Silence is uncomfortable. We want sensory input to fill all our waking hours. But the Bible teaches us to set it all aside, so that in the silence, you can hear the voice of God.
