When Religions Collide #2 of 2

November 10, 2010
Persecution of Christians is on the way up in America, giving today’s believers a taste of what the early church had to face. The word of God gives clear direction on how Christians should respond to an antagonistic culture. It also tells us how not to respond. Today, Erwin Lutzer summarizes how to live in a godly way in an increasingly godless society.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. The world has little interest in the doctrines that Christians believe. But it takes notice when believers love one another. As someone has said, our lives are the books that people read every day. And those outside the church are drawn to experience the love that we as believers share. Today: a look at why we do what we do, and what our underlying motive must be if we’re to reach the lost.

In the body of Christ the strong help the weak, and the healthy help the ailing. No one has to face life’s tough times alone. As each member of the body first submits to God and then serves others, the whole body thrives. Sometimes, economic hardship takes its toll, and so, today, we’ll hear some practical words on how we can support each other in times of need.

Each of us has to make choices every day, choices on using our time, talents, and treasure, and on setting priorities. As members of the body of Christ we have a mission to fulfill, and a disciplined use of our resources is key to getting God’s work done. Today: we’ll look at how to determine our priorities, and then, how to live by them.

The word diversity scares some people. They’d rather spend time with those of like mind than embrace those they consider “different". In the body of Christ, there is great diversity. And the mature Christian enjoys the gifts of every member of the body, since each believer has a unique contribution to make to the growth of Christ’s kingdom on earth.

Take apart an old alarm clock and you’ll see an amazing array of gears all working together to make sure you wake up on time. If any gear gets out of place, the whole thing grinds to a halt. It’s similar in the local church, if people aren’t serving where God wants them to serve, the whole ministry is shortchanged. Today, we will learn what spiritual gifts are and why it is so vital that we find out which gift we have.

Ever feel like a square peg in a round hole? Try as you might, you don’t seem to fit in with others. Happily, there’s a solution. God has a place of service for every Christian, and a spiritual gift every Christian can use to benefit others in that place of service. If we fail to use our gifts, the body of Christ suffers. Today, we’ll learn how to identify our gifts, and, how to put them to work.

All great dramas build to a conclusion. The drama of redemption begins in Eden and ends with new heavens and a new earth. All the plot elements are wrapped up in a glorious resolution: the enemies of Christ are vanquished, the rebellious are judged, and the redeemed find themselves on streets of gold in the New Jerusalem. Today: the finale to the grand plan that God set in motion before the world began.
