When Others Won't Forgive You #2 of 2

October 8, 2009
When you try to swat a bee, be sure he'll try to sting you. And when you hurt other people, they may just try to hurt you back. One thing kids learn real quick is how to get even. Taking revenge is a natural reaction when we're offended. But the Bible commands us to not seek revenge. Today: rising above our instincts and allowing God to be the one who makes things right.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It seems that conflict is inevitable. Even if we do no wrong, someone out there is all set to do some wrong to us. Resolving the resulting conflicts can be as painful as it is necessary. We must extend forgiveness even when every emotion in us tells us to "get even" instead. Today: more practical counsel on reconciliation: making things right with God and man.

Americans look forward to holiday times...times to gather with friends and relatives, times of shared happiness. But many among us dread times like these because it means facing people who've hurt us, or worse, people we've hurt. Unresolved conflicts are the collateral damage of sin, even forgiven sin. Today: putting damaged relationships back on track.

We can do a lot of damage when we sin. Even though forgiven, sin can leave some serious consequences in its wake. Handling the ongoing pain we've caused is a daunting, but necessary task. Today: we'll begin learning how to seek forgiveness from those we've hurt, and then watch as God graciously brings new life and new hope out of our bad situations.

Certain laws are built into the fabric of the universe...gravity...the speed of light...and the principles of sowing and reaping. You can't avoid gravity, and you can't change the speed of light. Neither can you buck the system that says "what you reap, you sow." God uses this principle to teach His children to not sin...sometimes the lessons are hard. If you find it tough to stop sinning, stay with us.

Most of us are creatures of habit. It's easy to fall back into old patterns of sin, even after we've sought God's forgiveness. Often we get tripped up in the race of life by returning to the detours of past behavior. Some of us are quite sure there's no way to break out of the cycle of sin, forgiveness, restoration, and back to sin. Today: we begin to find that way out.

The Bible says that when God forgives our sins, He "remembers them no more." How can this be, since God knows everything? After great spiritual failures we say with King David, "My sin is ever before me." So how can it not be before God? The answer lies in the concept of "covering." Today: hope for all who fear their sins on earth will never be forgotten in heaven.

When we're faced with the long-term consequences of our sins, it can be hard to believe that God has really forgiven them. Many who struggle with guilt find it returning to haunt them even after they've sought forgiveness from God. We need to realize that God will help us deal with sin's consequences once we reckon ourselves clean in His sight through Christ.

Maybe you've embezzled funds, had an affair, abandoned your family, or even gotten away with a serious felony. Even though you've not been caught by the law, you have been caught by your own guilt. Life is closing in on you...no peace...no happiness...no future hope. Today: the key to freedom from guilt, and forgiveness from the God who can bestow it as a gift.

Many people carry a paralyzing burden of guilt for past sins. What's worse, they see no way out of their predicaments. These people don't run in the race of life, they plod at best. Beset by the crushing load of self-blame, they face each new day with yesterday's emotional baggage. Today: you'll hear God's way out of bearing guilt for the rest of your life.

When we sin greatly, many of us flee from God, thinking there's no way we can ever get back into the Father's good graces. We run our races of life on tough terrain, finding out that sin takes us where we really don't want to go. When we get weary enough, some of us make the crucial choice to return to the Father, no matter what. Today: the journey home begins.
