When Loyalties Collide, Part 2 of 2 (Christians in Conflict)

November 4, 2013

We can still enjoy July 4 fireworks, but for many Christians, the liberties we celebrate are now being sharply curtailed. Under pressure from agenda-driven groups, what was once free speech is now a federal crime. In the public schools, tax money is used to indoctrinate our kids in the homosexual lifestyle. Is there a time to stand up and say “no?” Pastor Lutzer says that now is the time.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. For a long time, Christians could comfortably wave the American flag, since they saw their values represented in “Old Glory….” Now the government is repressing the freedoms Christians once had, favoring those desiring same–sex marriage and unrestricted abortion. When the red, white and blue no longer blends with the cross of Christ, what do believers do?

Like snowflakes, no two people are alike. The differences bring great variety, but they can also plant seeds of conflict. Each of us is wired from birth to put self first. Only the Spirit of God can smooth the rough edges and help us extend ourselves in blessing to others.  Today, Dr. Erwin Lutzer tells the story of a cab driver with a horrid past, a man who needed a friend.

As someone once said, “The church is wonderful, I love the church – I just can’t stand the people.” We are certainly not in the Garden of Eden anymore.  When disagreements and personal agendas rise to the surface, frictions can occur even between believers. Today, Dr. Erwin Lutzer exposes a not-so-secret secret:  Christians do not always get along.

Despite the wide variety of Christian denominations, you will find some common elements in them all. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper are two sacraments all Christians observe in one way or another. Dr. Erwin Lutzer tells us what we share as fellow believers, despite our differences, and gives us a big-picture view of the church from God’s perspective.

Some critics of Christianity look at its thousands of denominations and splinter groups that call themselves Christian and wonder, “Where is the unity that Jesus talked about?”  There is no doubt that opinions and Bible interpretations vary widely. How then should a believer handle the fact that the Christian faith is represented in so many different ways?

Persecution of Christians is on the way up in America, giving today’s believers a taste of what the early church had to face. The Word of God gives clear direction on how Christians should respond to an antagonistic culture.  It also tells us how not to respond.  Today, Erwin Lutzer summarizes how to live in a godly way in an increasingly godless society.

America has been called a melting pot of cultures and races. These days, it is a melting pot for religions as well. The problem is that different religions don’t melt together very well. Despite America’s Judeo-Christian roots, the Ten Commandments are now censored, even when they hang over courtroom benches.

When you hit rock bottom, you know you can’t go any lower. Alcoholics and drug addicts know this all too well. The Bible’s famous prodigal son demanded his inheritance, and spent it all in a big hurry. Reduced to eating with the pigs, he realized he needed to come home and face the dad who had begged him not to leave.

During the teen years, kids believe they know much more than mom and dad. They long to break free from the prison they call home. Many parents have a heavy heart, knowing that their son or daughter is far away from them and far from God. Today, a famous Bible story will give hope to all parents of prodigal children.  Yesterday, we read a sad account of Absalom.  Today, we will hear a story with a happier ending.

“He who fathers a wise son will be glad in him.” Proverbs 23 has words David wished could have been true for him. As part of a classic dysfunctional family, Absalom rebelled against his father David. He went his own way, and ended up dead. The story is in the Bible for us to read and to heed its warnings.
