We don't know a lot about the New Testament church at Smyrna. There's no record of its founding. But what we do know speaks volumes about the opinion Jesus had of this church, and the opinion he has of our churches today. "I have good news, and I have bad news." We've all heard someone say this, and then we wonder which news to hear first. Jesus had words for seven churches in the early chapters of the book of Revelation. The first church was Ephesus, and for that church his message was a mix of good and bad. He gave the good news first, and then expressed his judgment on a matter he felt was crucial.

New Christians often have a radiant love for Jesus. Sadly, as time passes, that love sometimes cools. In the first century AD, Ephesus was a major city along the coast of what is now Turkey. Acts 18 tells of Paul's founding of its local church. Later, Jesus commended the Ephesian church, and then chastised them for leaving their first love. What would he say about your church?

We learn from the book of Philippians that God has highly exalted Jesus, giving him the name which is above every name. That exalted Jesus fills the pages of the book of Revelation, a Jesus with hair as white as snow and eyes of flaming fire. In John's vision of Jesus, he falls before Him as one dead. Yet Jesus offers words of kindness before detailing his judgments on seven churches of that day.

The Bible ends with the book of Revelation: a glimpse into the future. Here we see Christ in glory, the Lord of his church. Seven local churches in what is now Turkey each received a personal word from Jesus. These words tell us what he thought of those churches, and, by implication, what he thinks of our churches today. His words will sometimes commend, and sometimes sting.

At Emmaus, the resurrected Jesus walked with disciples so dejected, so sorrowful that they did not even recognize Him. Their dreams shattered, they only sought escape from their pain. But their hearts were strangely warmed by this passerby. Inviting Him to dinner, they found themselves face to face with the One they loved, but never really understood.

Early on, the disciples of Jesus argued over who would sit with Him in the kingdom. But when Jesus died, their dreams died. Their best-laid plans were in ruins. For some, the best thing to do seemed to be to simply walk away and forget those three wonderful years with Christ. As banks fail and governments scramble to point blame, many people have serious doubts that anyone knows what they're doing. As we think of the resurrection of Jesus, we remember a doubting disciple who needed solid evidence before believing his Master was really alive. Jesus then showed him his wounded hands and side, saying, "Blessed are those who have not seen, and yet have believed."

When we think of Palm Sunday, we think of adoring crowds cheering a King. We don't tend to think of a cursed fig tree. But just one day after riding into Jerusalem, Jesus did indeed curse a fig tree for not bearing fruit. As we come to understand this event, it's clear that our bearing fruit is very important to God. What are the implications for you and me?

We read the ads in the paper: "sale ends Tuesday." But we know there will soon be another sale, and so we're not impressed. But some opportunities really do have a limited time window. Jesus presented Himself to the nation Israel when He entered Jerusalem on a donkey. They rejected Him, and the city was later destroyed.
