When Comfort Is Discomfort, Part 2 of 2

August 24, 2012
What are friends for? Hopefully, to be there when you need them. Otherwise, you run life’s race as if you’re the only one on the track. When you’re hit with bad news you can scarcely absorb, a friend can be a great help. However, Job’s friends were scant comfort when he was undergoing his severe trials. Their counsel demonstrates the limits of human understanding.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. We all need friends during hard times. But sometimes, well-meaning friends can do more harm than good. Today, we’ll meet some men who tried to help Job during his suffering. Truly, with friends like these, who needs enemies? This Bible story reveals a lot about human nature, and its limits in understanding God’s purposes.

There are far worse things to lose than one’s possessions. Even Job’s great faith wilted when he lost his health. First, your savings, then your job. Then your children. Finally, you learn you have terminal cancer. How would you handle the loss of everything? Would you curse God and die, as Job’s wife urged him to do? Listen to today’s message for answers to some really tough questions.

A hurricane destroys a coastal town. Cancer strikes a promising athlete. Bad things happen to good people, and we ask “Why?” Life can take tragic turns. Your retirement savings are vaporized by corrupt bankers. Your stock holdings turn to dust. We can be detoured into great sorrow and disappointment. But we must learn, as Job did, that God is still there.

When all is going well, believers have little sense of their need for God. But when calamity strikes, they’ll tell a different story. When the economy fractures and your job is lost, the reason can be hard to understand. When you lose your health, or your child, something inside screams out “Why?” But there’s a supreme purpose for suffering, as a man named Job discovered long ago.

A gymnast trains for years to be able to perform flawlessly. But at the Olympics she falls from the balance beam, crying “Why?” “Why” is the word that haunts us when things go wrong — a child dies, a job is lost, a reputation is slandered. We’ve all had times when we’ve questioned God’s purposes. Millennia ago a man named Job showed us how to ask why.

“You do your thing, and I’ll do mine.” In today’s culture, that’s the mantra of tolerance. But in terms of salvation, only one thing matters. Faith in Christ is the non-negotiable factor that transforms people from darkness to light, and changes their destinies from hell to heaven. Nothing is more important to understand, and today you’ll hear a crystal-clear explanation.

People with no hope beyond this life live only for this life. Their motto, “eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.” In contrast, Christians look forward to a home in heaven. And this outlook turns their inward look to an upward look...a look full of promise and hope. This hope is something we can share with all who ask us why we have that hope. Do you have that hope?

A baseball legend once pointed to center field, showing where the next pitch was going. The crowd roared as the ball left the park. Babe Ruth knew where that ball was going. And Christians can know where they are going after death. That’s because our assurance of salvation is built on three pillars in the Scriptures, none of which is in any danger of being toppled.

When a group of runners hits the track, not one of them can be certain that he’ll finish the race first, or even finish at all. However, in the race of the Christian life, it’s possible to be certain that you will finish in heaven. Knowing your destiny makes all the trials of this life bearable. The assurance of salvation is our focus in today’s message.

The thrill of winning a marathon is deep and fulfilling. Holding the victory cup makes all the effort and training worthwhile. But a greater joy awaits those who, through the new birth, begin their own race on the track of the Christian life. And past the finish line of this life lies an eternal future with Christ Himself. Today we’ll study why the new birth is a miracle only God can perform.
