We Have No Map for This Territory, Part 1 of 2

September 10, 2012
The days ahead may well be days of less money, fewer options, higher prices, and more uncertainty. For many, the comforts we’ve known may fade away into an even tougher reality: no job, no insurance, perhaps a foreclosed home. How do we handle deprivation when all we’ve known is abundance? This message is the beginning of a series of messages to prepare us for “such a time as this.”

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Job learned a great lesson in his unspeakable time of suffering — lessons we need to learn to help us in our times of trials. Victorious runners in life’s race know that they are clay in the Potter’s hands. And the Potter can do whatever He wishes with His clay. Can you accept this bottom-line reality? What is more, can you embrace it?

Hidden in the councils of heaven are the answers to the heartfelt cries of millions of people — people who simply want to know “why?” As we run the race of life, we encounter troubles we can’t explain and circumstances we don’t think we deserve. We seek a reason for our pain, and perhaps only the life to come will reveal the answers we crave. Remember that beyond our pain is God Himself.

When God speaks, all other voices are silenced. All creation pauses to listen. When He speaks, the skies thunder. We can know that our life has a purpose, even when we suffer along the way. Job learned this from the Voice in the whirlwind. If you’re going through unspeakable pain, listen to that Voice, and hear what God is saying.

When we face severe trials, we ask “Why?” We may never know the answer. But for Job, the answer was dramatic: a voice from out of a whirlwind. We who run life’s race serve a God Whose purposes are often hidden from us, but we’re called to trust His heart even when we can’t understand His actions. Today, we will learn that God transcends our limited viewpoint of His will.

In many ways, God is hidden to us. We can’t begin to fathom His purposes. Still, we persevere in faith, knowing He’s active. Runners in life’s race must learn that God is too big for anyone to comprehend. A man named Job was sorely tested by God, and then found some wisdom by discussing his plight with a young man named Elihu. Is God big enough to superintend your suffering?

Tough questions must be faced. Questions like “where was God in the Holocaust?” And, “Why is our economy unraveling?” We need to know that these kinds of questions can be faced, and have been faced. Yet there are mysteries we can’t fathom, and may never fathom. Every generation needs to learn some key lessons anew, and today, it’s our turn.

For a runner of the Christian life, the ultimate question is not “will I win this race?” but rather, “when I die, will I live again?” That’s the question Job raised several thousand years ago. And that question still haunts men and women today. Surely this brief life is not all there is? Something deep down inside cries out for a sense of long-term meaning that transcends our short-term problems.

When a thief steals from you, you feel violated. When circumstances conspire to ruin your future, you feel angry. Something within us demands an answer when we’re the victims of economic collapse or the slander of others. Today, through the life of Job, we will explore the heavenly reasons for our earthly misfortunes, and how Jesus would answer Job’s painful cries.

Your company is bankrupt. Your pension and health benefits are gone. You’re in a state of panic. What do you do? Suffering can’t be separated from the human experience. Some people seem to glide through life unscathed, while others bear unimaginable burdens. Job’s anguish of soul during his trials paints a picture that cries for the answer to “why?”

We’ve all seen Olympic track stars who fall, faces torn by anger and grief. Suffering is tough, especially when captured on worldwide television. Each of us has experienced, or will experience, some kind of suffering. It’s part of life. The story of Job teaches lessons about suffering that all of us need to hear.
