December 30, 2008
In every Olympic race, someone must win. Someone must take home the gold medal, the supreme emblem of victory. In running life's race we sometimes labor under the illusion that we can control all the variables of life. But the real truth is this: there are some things that must happen. And when God says they must, they will. What are these things? To find out, stay with us.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Our eyes only see light in a narrow spectrum. Beyond blue is ultraviolet, beyond red is infrared. There is much we do not see, and as we run life's race, it's good to get a new perspective. Getting a fresh view of how God sees things can help us run and not be weary, despite the afflictions we suffer. God's view takes in all the wavelengths, and He's revealed what that view includes.

If you believe the media, what matters most is either who got elected, who's caught up in the latest scandal, or who's going with who. In a hundred years, none of this will matter. Let's cut through the clutter, fly above today's clouds of gloom and find out what really is most important. The answer lies in the words of the Apostle Paul, words that will transform your life.

When Jesus said, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free," He made possible the ultimate kind of freedom. All real freedom has its roots in truth, and Christ said He was the truth. For all who are trapped in addictions and oppression, Christ's gift of liberty is yours to take. Today is Christmas, and for the best Christmas present you'll ever get, stay with us.

In America, we pride ourselves on being free...free to eat too much, pray too little, and spend ourselves into debt. In fact, what we call freedom is really a form of bondage...a slavery to our desires with little regard for eternal consequences. Today: you'll hear about a gift you can open...a gift that unlocks the prison door and can really set you free.

The skies over Bethlehem had never before radiated this much glory. Massed angels brought the light of the noonday sun. As shepherds cowered in fear, the angels announced the light of the world. Today, we'll see why Christ is God's great Christmas gift of light, and what that light uncovers when it shines in our dark hearts.

Parents love their children...pastors love their congregations. But God loved mankind enough to send a great gift. As we run the last mile of the Christmas race, let's not forget the gift of God's Son, without Whom there would be no reason for the season. His sacrifice demonstrated love on a scale that cannot be measured. How much do we love?

Just six days! Only six days left to cruise the malls in hope of finding something for that special someone. As your race to the stores nears the goal line, let's pause to consider the great gift we have been given: the gift of God's Son two thousand years ago. The love God showed us then is the real reason we can celebrate during this time of year. To learn more about that love, stay with us.

If you're a Christian, do you share your faith? We who have eternal life often forget the emptiness in those who don't. How glad we are that Jesus gives eternal life. But only a spiritual connection with Him can impart that life to us. Today: more about the gift of life, one of the four great gifts God gave at Christmas, and why we should, in turn, give that gift to others.

It's mid-December: time to get those presents for those we love. If there's one thing kids go for, it's Christmas gifts. How glad we are that God gives us richly all things to enjoy. And in sending His Son to earth, He gave us four great gifts we should remember when we think of the birth of Jesus. Today: we'll unwrap gift number one.

John Newton wrote about "Amazing Grace that saved a wretch like me." We like the song, but we're not so sure about that "wretch" part. The fact is, we can't win in life's race without agreeing with God about our basic condition. We need His grace, not to supplement our goodness, but to save us from our depravity. For some straight talk about how badly we need the grace of God, stay tuned.
