In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Tyranny: it sets in fast when a nation’s leaders stop acknowledging their accountability to a higher power. As the U.S. government increasingly decides which laws to enforce, we get laws that contravene not just the Constitution, but also, common sense. Today: why America is fast approaching the cliff of despotism with freedom extinguished by those in power.

Only a few people remember the horrors of Nazi Germany. History has a way of re-writing itself to hide bad memories. Germany in the 1930’s faced economic ruin. So may America. Germany listened to a man who promised a new era of national greatness. So may America. But Adolf Hitler started a World War. What happens if we, too, forget God?

Temptations to sin do not stop the moment a person becomes a Christian. In fact, they may become even greater. The enemy of our souls will do anything to keep us mired in the sins we used to commit. Jesus sets us free from the compulsion to sin, but we must be diligent to avoid situations that might cause us to fall back into old patterns of behavior.

Before people believe in Jesus, they have no choice, they’ll repeatedly sin. But after conversion, they do have a choice. At conversion, a new believer is set free from his old slave master — the devil. He’s no longer obligated to commit the sins he committed before. Breaking free from old patterns involves a process called “reckoning oneself dead unto sin but alive unto God.”

It’s natural to be selfish — to put yourself first and make yourself look good. It’s also natural to sin — to disobey God in ways both big and small. Until we are redeemed by faith in Jesus, we’ll never be free of our obligation to sin. But once that transaction takes place, we are set free from our old master to serve Christ.

Built into every one of us is a tendency to focus on ourselves. We see life through the lens of “how does this affect me?” After the first murder, Cain had no remorse for killing Abel. He bemoaned his fate of being made a restless wanderer. Today we will take a look at how self-focus is shared by all of us, and how we can only get our eyes off of ourselves through the redemption Jesus provides.

One of the great contrasts in the New Testament is between Adam and Jesus. Both men died, but only one of them gives life. Sin entered the world through Adam, but righteousness came through Jesus Christ. Thanks to Jesus, there is a way to recover from the damage Adam did. The death sentence was carried out on the Son of God, saving us from that awful penalty.

In the garden of Eden, an infection entered the human race. That infection has since spread to every last one of us. The infection is sin, which means “missing the mark” of God’s standards. Whether we commit small sins or big sins, the outcome is the same — an eternity of separation from God. Today we’ll look at a short history of sin, and what God did to save us from its penalty.

There’s more to being saved than most people realize. It involves being given a series of wonderful gifts from the hand of God. Those gifts include the trials we experience, trials that produce perseverance, character, and hope — all wrapped up in the love of God poured out in our hearts. Today, the basis for the hope of the Christian, the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf.

In a recent years, the annual suicide rate has risen to over 33,000 in the United States. These people saw no way out of their misery and committed suicide. They all had one thing in common — they’d lost all hope that things could get better. They thought that ending their own life was their only alternative. One of the great blessings God confers on those who believe in Jesus is hope — a hope that Paul says “does not disappoint.”
