The Spirit We Embrace, Part 1 of 2

November 22, 2011
Some philosophers acknowledge that there must be a God who created all that we see. They argue, however, that He is distant, and uninvolved. But the Bible reveals that God works by the Holy Spirit in the lives of those who believe, providing day-by-day guidance, comfort, wisdom, and insight for even the smallest details of life. What, or who, is the Holy Spirit?

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. The death of Jesus Christ on a Roman cross has been interpreted in many ways. Some see it as a sad end to a good life. But the Bible tells us that His death was a sacrifice that took the penalty for the sins of the whole world. The central mission of Jesus was to die, and then be raised by God the Father, to open the way for all who believe to find eternal life. Today, a further look at “The Son We Follow.”

God is so vast and incomprehensible that unless He took direct action, we would never understand Him in a meaningful sense. He took that action two thousand years ago when Jesus Christ appeared on earth. The Bible reveals that Jesus is the Son of God, and that all the fullness of God dwells in Him. Now, to see what God is all about, all we need do is look at Jesus. Today, we will take that look, a look at “The Son We Follow.”

How can one describe God? How can one describe anything infinite? The best we can do is to list some of His attributes. In his series on "What We Believe", Erwin Lutzer is describing “The Father We Worship.” He is doing that by describing the primary qualities of God.   These qualities open a door of understanding, a door that lets us catch a glimpse of His greatness as well as His grace.

Some religions have millions of deities. The Christian faith is based on the self-revelation of a single, omnipotent, God. Jesus taught us to call him “Our Father.” In the Bible, God has many names, but only one character. He is absolute holiness combined with infinite power, love, and justice. Today, we will come to grips with “The Father We Worship”.

You are being chased by wolves toward a gorge. A fragile rope bridge spans the gulf. Do you trust the bridge or face the wolves? Dramatic, yes. But this is the bottom line when it comes to the Bible; at some point your doubts have to give way to faith, that the Bible is what it says it is — the Word of God — and the only book that can lead you across the gorge of death into eternity.

What are your core beliefs? And how deeply do you believe them? For Christians, the Bible is at the center of what we believe. Some question the Bible’s origins and its authority. Can we rely on this ancient book? Today, we begin a new series on the key doctrines that define Christianity and help us understand why the Bible can be trusted.

Do you ever wonder if your coming to faith in Christ was an accident, or a coincidence, or maybe just a good choice on your part? Not a chance! The Bible says that, “Salvation is of the Lord”. That includes the circumstances of your conversion. In Acts 8, God went to unusual lengths to provide the gospel to an Ethiopian. And you know what? He did the same for you and me.

These days, people look to their iPhones or their PDA’s to find out what is next on their overly busy schedules. Keeping appointments is crucial for business success. But God has heavenly plans for His people, and sometimes His list of things for us to do includes change our plans.

Most people invest heavily in their futures. Savings accounts and retirement plans give us comfort for those “golden years”. But wise believers know that the real future lies in the hands of God, not in any plans we can make. Like the martyr Stephen, our ultimate destiny lies beyond this life. Forget the 401K, you are going to hear about the eternal future ahead for a child of God.
