The Roots of Rage #2 of 2

December 2, 2008
Some people think you can get rid of anger by hitting something inanimate, and "letting off steam." Trouble is: this doesn't work. Modern pop psychology is no match for the Bible in pinpointing the source of rage, or in helping us control the anger we all experience at one time or another. Today: we'll learn more about the causes of anger and how to handle it properly.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It's sad, but true: in our modern, enlightened culture, we no longer repent of our sins. Instead, we've learned to manage them. We're so deceived, we think we're OK as long as we keep our sins in balance, like a circus juggler. We do this, knowing full well that God is not fooled. Yet, we do it anyway. Today: the bitter fruits of deception.

From presidents to paupers, a common theme of the human race is self-deception. We lie, and what's more, we enjoy it. We're far from being the inherently good people our culture says we are. In fact, apart from certain restraints, we're capable of unspeakable evil. Today: another chapter in our journey of self-discovery, a journey in which we're finding out why we do what we do.

A carnival house of mirrors is a lot of fun. First you're fat, then thin, then you're both. But at the exit, the real you comes out. Many people are deluded, seeing themselves as they want to, not as they are. One cause of this can be refusing to listen to the honest critiques of others. Today: more lessons from James on self-perception: and, on what it means to hear correctly.

When Timothy McVeigh went to his execution, America was left wondering how a decorated war veteran could've done something so evil. Many ask why seemingly good people turn bad. How can someone turn violent after a lifetime of apparent normalcy? The answer lies in understanding our fundamental human nature. It's not easy, but if you're willing to face the truth, stay with us.

When God showed Jeremiah how the nation Israel was under His control, He used the image of clay on a potter's wheel. Our nation, and your life and mine, are like that clay...under God's sovereign choice as to our shape and destiny. Lumps of clay depend on the potter to become something of value, and so must we. Today: more on what it means to be shaped by the Lord.

Every Christian faces trials, often heavy trials, and we may see no reason for the deep valleys through which we go....sudden bereavement, a job loss, serious illness....all of these may obscure the fact that God has an ultimate purpose. As clay on a potter's wheel, we are all being molded through our circumstances to become something beautiful. To see how, stay with us.

Jesus taught us to not worry. Yet many of us worry all the time. This causes stress, and erodes our spiritual power. We scan internet blogs looking for the latest threats to our freedom.....and yet Jesus told us to seek first His kingdom, and let Him handle our daily needs. If we truly do this, our anxieties will be gone. Want a new outlook, or re-directed focus?
