We can know that our running of life's race has a purpose, even when we suffer along the way. Job learned this from the Voice in the whirlwind. When we face severe trials, we ask "Why?" We may never know the answer. But for a suffering Job, the answer was dramatic...a voice from out of a whirlwind. We who run life's race serve a God Whose purposes are often hidden from us. We're called to trust His heart even when we can't understand His actions. Today, we'll learn that God transcends our limited viewpoint of His will.

In many ways, God is hidden to us. We cannot fathom His purposes. Still, we persevere in faith, knowing He's active. Runners in life's race must learn that God is too big for anyone to comprehend. A man named Job was sorely tested by God, and then found some wisdom by discussing his plight with a young man named Elihu. Consider this: is God big enough to superintend your suffering?

Tough questions must be faced. Questions like "where was God in the Holocaust?" And, "Why is our economy unraveling?" Runners in life's race need to know that these kinds of questions can be faced, and have been faced, yet, there are mysteries we cannot fathom and may never fathom. Every generation needs to learn some key lessons anew, and today, it's our turn.

For a runner, life's ultimate question is not "will I win this race?" but rather, "when I die, will I live again?" That's the provocative question Job raised several thousand years ago. And that question still haunts men and women today. Surely this brief life is not all there is? Something deep down inside cries out for a sense of long-term meaning that transcends our short-term problems.

We've all seen Olympic track stars who fall...faces torn by anger and grief. Suffering: it's tough on national TV. It's tough anytime. Each of us either has experienced, or will experience some kind of suffering along life's track. It goes with the human condition. The story of Job teaches lessons about suffering that all of us need to hear for that time when it's our turn.

What are friends for? Hopefully, to be there when you need them. Otherwise, you run life's race as if you're the only one on the track. When you're hit with bad news you can scarcely absorb, a friend can be a great help. However, the friends of Job were scant comfort when he was undergoing his severe trials. Their counsel demonstrated the limits of human understanding.
