Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer

The New Testament, Part One #1 of 2

October 22, 2010
In the drama of redemption, the Old Testament is a grand prologue. In the New Testament, the great transaction takes place. A sacrifice for the sins of all mankind is offered on a cross outside the city of Jerusalem. Jesus gives his life not far from where Abraham almost offered his son Isaac. No playwright could dream of a story so bold, so loving, and so wonderful.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Behind all the history we read in the Bible lies the purpose of God: to provide redemption for those that believe. The nation Israel had one reason for being: to bring forth a Messiah who would first die as a sacrifice for sin, and later be raised to return one day as king over all the earth. Today: more Old Testament history about the line from which Jesus would come.

It is the kind of stuff that fascinates us when we watch The History Channel. It is the story of the nation of Israel. The Old Testament is many things: prophecy, history, law, and wisdom literature such as Psalms and Proverbs. Today we are continuing our jet-plane flyover of the Old Testament, and we will focus on the time period when Israel, it’s temple destroyed, was taken into capitivity.

When people pick up the Bible for the first time, it can be a daunting experience. The big question is: where do I begin?” If you want a big-picture view of the whole Bible, you have come to the right place. We are exploring The Drama of Redemption, giving a quick overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Today: more of the Old Testament will fly past us, so listen closely.

Imagine the earth as a grand stage. A great drama is continually being played out. But this play is for real. The sins of mankind separated us from our Creator. But God was not content to let his finest creation die with no hope. He set in motion a plan to redeem those that believe in the value of a great sacrifice: that of Jesus on the cross.

As individuals, we cannot change the whole world. But we can change ourselves, and our kids, and thereby make a difference. There is a costly war in Afghanistan. But there’s a bigger war going on in our culture, with many more casualties. Bitterness can last a long time. Once begun, it can infect others, causing generations to hate future generations. King David let bad situations fester in his family until the poison burst out in civil strife. Let’s resolve to learn from the mistakes of an otherwise great man, and deal with unresolved matters long before they explode.

As proverbs tells us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Israel’s King David was a great leader, a noted military commander, a “man after God’s own heart,” and a lousy father. Today we look at the Bible’s honest portrayal of David, and the great damage done by his failure as a dad.
