We encounter many conflicts and divisions in our lives, but none weightier than the conflict between God and sinful man. Two thousand years ago that wall was breached in a feeding trough behind an inn in the tiny town of Bethlehem.

When mankind rebelled against God, the chasm between the two was infinite. Justice demanded payment for this great sin. Only God could bridge this gap, and He did so by sending Jesus into the world, born into a peasant family in Israel. This baby was much more than met the eye. He speaks of Himself in the Bible’s last book as the Alpha and Omega.

Of all the planets that orbit all the stars in our near-infinite universe, one planet was special. One planet was visited. The Apostle Paul wrote of a deep mystery: “great is the mystery of godliness; God was manifest in the flesh.” At Christmas we remember a night like no other, the night Jesus was born on planet Earth.

Some think God’s bottom line for the offering plate is how much money ends up there. However, He has another agenda. God’s desire is that our giving be cheerful, not driven by a sense that we are in trouble if we don’t give. He wants our hearts first, and only then our open wallets. Farmers know it’s pretty simple: no seeds, no plants. No plants, no vegetables. No vegetables, no harvest. They know all about the laws of sowing and reaping, laws God set in motion a long time ago. Those laws work in agriculture, and they also apply to financial giving. Today, we’ll explore what Paul wrote about this to the church at Corinth.

Some might see putting money in the offering plate as a one-way trip to nowhere. Jesus told a parable exploding this myth once and for all. The bottom line is that money given to transform the lives of others bears a thousand-percent return-on-investment. That’s because the real bank is in heaven, not downtown.

Wise money managers know the term ROI: return on investment - the bottom line when putting cash at risk. Christians have bank accounts on earth but also in heaven. Ever feel manipulated when a preacher says “God is watching” as the offering plate goes by? Yet it is true that He is watching. Jesus was in the temple courtyard, watching as the rich made sure the crowds saw them give. Then, He noticed a poor widow who dropped her last two mites in the treasury.

It’s always big news when a wealthy benefactor drops a few million on a college or pays for a new hospital wing. But no one seems to notice a poor person giving a quarter to someone else in need. That is, no one but Jesus, whose keen eye watched a lady entering the temple courts one day in Jerusalem. Could you ever be commended by God for giving all you have?

An old proverb says “Many hands make light work.” In the church, everyone has a part in meeting financial needs. In the book of Exodus, we read of the building of God’s tabernacle. There’s great detail on everyone’s contribution, both of time and treasure, to make the project a success. When we see giving as an act of worship, we cease focusing on the money and begin focusing on God.
