The Mystery of the Angels #1 of 2

December 21, 2010
After the last prophet’s writings, the voice of God fell silent in Israel for four hundred years. Then, one day a brilliant light flooded the skies over a sleepy town south of Jerusalem. Myriads of angels announced the coming of a Savior, who was Christ the Lord. These messengers of God proclaimed the greatest news sinful mankind would ever hear.

But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. Jesus said of Himself, “the son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” He always had to sleep in someone else’s home. His first night on earth was in a borrowed manger, a cattle feeding trough. The Son of God began His time among us in rude surroundings. No kingly pomp. Just a humble bed of straw. We can learn much from his first hours in Bethlehem, and today, we will.

Bethlehem lies six miles south of Jerusalem. These days, a barrier wall separates the two to prevent violence. The conflict between Palestinians and Jews is as old as the Bible, and this division is symbolic of another division: that between a holy God and sinful man. Two thousand years ago that wall was breached in a feeding trough behind an inn in the tiny town of Bethlehem.

When mankind rebelled against God, the chasm between the two was infinite. Justice demanded payment for this great sin. Only God could bridge this gap, and he did so by sending Jesus into the world, born into a peasant family in Israel. This baby was much more than he seemed at first appearance. He speaks of Himself in the Bible’s last book as the Alpha and Omega. Today: what this means.

Of all the planets that orbit all the stars in our near-infinite universe, one planet was special. One planet was visited. The Apostle Paul wrote of a deep mystery: “great is the mystery of godliness; God was manifest in the flesh.” At Christmas we remember a night like no other, the night Jesus was born on planet Earth. Today: part one of a wondrous story.

Some of the early church’s darkest days were its brightest, the days of persecution under the Caesars in the city of Rome. We who run life’s race today may complain that we are persecuted for our faith. But we have it a lot easier than our forebears, who were killed by lions and gladiators to please Roman officials and a cheering audience. In Rome, key events shaped the future of the Christian church.

In its glory days, runners could get there from anywhere, because of only one city was it ever said: “All roads lead to...” Rome. Rome became the center of a great world empire. Here the Caesars reigned; here, the gladiators fought, and here the Christians were persecuted. Before its downfall, Rome was the place where the church and state became one.

The city of Athens gave the world its best philosophers, the ideals of democracy, and was the birthplace of the Olympic spirit. The noble thinkers of Athens soared above their peers elsewhere. Their open-mindedness allowed many avenues of thought to be debated in public discourse. It was before this audience of elite philosophers that the Apostle Paul stood to speak at a place called Mars Hill.

It was the birthplace of democracy, philosophy, and it gave birth to the Olympic games. It is the city of Athens. Here we find the Acropolis with its amazing Parthenon, and a famous hill where Paul the Apostle once preached. This great Greek city-state was a major crossroads of the ancient world, and what happened here is our focus on today’s broadcast.

Great cities of the Bible, places like Babylon, Jericho, and Jerusalem, all have a legacy for those who run life’s race today. That legacy consists of the lessons we can learn from how God dealt with those cities, and might then deal with our city. On this broadcast: lessons from ancient Ninevah, a city God visited with revival under the unwilling ministry of the prophet Jonah.
December 8, 2010
When you think of Bible characters who were athletes, you have to think of Jonah, who ran as fast as he could when God gave him a job to do. He ran away from Ninevah, an ancient city for which God had a special plan. Today, we will learn about this city, the God who showed it mercy, and the prophet who was unwilling to bring them the message God wanted them to hear.
