The Miracle We Need, Part 1 of 2

August 9, 2012
Most of us are somewhat out of shape, and for us to make any kind of decent showing at a track meet, well, that would take a miracle. It takes another kind of miracle to set us on the road to heaven. All the effort we could ever expend won’t take us an inch in heaven’s direction. Jesus told us that what we need is the miracle of the new birth — and that’s today’s topic on Running to Win.

In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Athletes love to win, and if there’s one thing keeping them from winning, you can be sure they’ll do whatever it takes to deal with it. For those running the race of life, the goal line is heaven. Now if there’s one thing you have to have to get into heaven, you’ll want to know what it is, right? Today you will find out just how desperately we all need the gift of righteousness.

Humans can live for weeks without food; perhaps days without water. But without air, we would die in a few minutes. In the Christian life, there’s one gift of God that believers can’t live without. We dare not die without it either, since this gift opens the doors of heaven, making us acceptable in God’s sight. Want to know what this gift is?

As believers mature in the faith, they realize it is time to get out of the stands and into the race. They have to run to win. Their strength comes from God — given to them because of His abundant grace, and His unmerited favor towards them through Christ. And the grace that none of us deserves is our focus in today’s message.

Some call it “God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.” Christian’s know the anagram as “grace.” Once they understand what the Bible teaches about salvation, they know that grace is unmerited favor. And they thank God every day for the grace that made it possible for them to become citizens of heaven.

When running the race of the Christian life, it’s easy to forget those who’ve never gotten on the track. Millions of people don’t know where it is. They try to gain heaven through their own efforts. They think that if their good deeds outweigh their bad, they’ll make it through heaven’s gates. Others hope that keeping the sacraments will insure their eternal future. So, what is the truth?

Picture a marathon runner all alone, way in front of the others. He doesn’t know that he left the correct route long ago. He’s sincere, but sincerely wrong. Run as he might, his efforts will never win him the race. Sincerity is great, but it’s not enough, especially when it comes to this all-important matter: the salvation of our souls.

The Christian life can be filled with joy, assurance, and deep satisfaction. But it’s also a life of suffering. Can these co-exist? Today, we will learn why faith always leads to ultimate victory, even though it may not change our immediate circumstances. We’ll come full-circle in our series on unanswered prayer, and find ourselves content with the God to Whom we pray.

All around us are people with long-term health issues. Issues that seem to have no resolution, short of divine healing. But when these people pray for healing, the answer appears to be an ongoing “no.” They hear the verse, “my strength is made perfect in weakness,” and wish, sadly, that their answer had been “here’s the healing you seek.” Are you disappointed with God today?

When Christians find themselves in a time of need, they naturally pray for God to provide. Sometimes the answer is “no…”. How we react to that negative reply is crucial. We must come to understand that even the “no” answers are still answers, and that God is fully aware of our needs and what is best for us. Today we’ll discuss why our faith can grow even when the answer is no.

It’s tough taking “no” for an answer. When we were kids, we all felt those “no’s,” when our parents denied our requests. There are times when the answer to a believer’s prayer is a clear “no.” When that happens, we can either become resentful, or we can increase our faith. Today we’ll learn how to react and respond when God denies a request.
