The Loss of Innocence #1 of 2

May 4, 2010
These days, some want to redefine marriage as any so-called loving relationship, no matter what gender the partners are. It's clear that our national soul is sick. Since marriage is God's appointed place for sex, marriage is under attack. People want to gratify their desires in every way but God's way. The result: millions of people's lives are tangled, their souls in turmoil. Stay with us.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. It's one thing to have strong faith in God when the sun's shining and all's well with the world. It's quite another when storms come. Storms teach lessons that calm seas never teach. A boatload of prisoners was sailing to Rome when their vessel sank in gale force winds. Were it not for the courage of Paul, one of those prisoners, all would have been lost. Today we take a look at the last chapter in an amazing story of faith.

Mature Christians know God's will is not a flower-strewn pathway. Often, storms arise that threaten to throw us off-course. Paul was determined to go to Rome, knowing it would be a one0way trip. He would take the gospel to the highest levels of government, but while enroute, a shipwreck would slow his journey. Today we look at Paul's troubles on the way to see Caesar.

One never knows what a day may bring forth. Locked up for two years, Paul suddenly faces a Roman King. What would he say? He was on his way to Rome, knowing he faced almost certain death there. But not before getting the gospel to the heart of the world's dominant empire. On the way, he plead his case before Rome's king in Israel at the time. Paul seizes the moment to make sure the gospel is understood.

What do you do with a political football like Paul? Various Roman leaders punted his case back and forth for two years. Accused of sedition, the Jews wanted him dead. Paul had appealed to Caesar, and ended up in a Caesarea prison. Years passed. Eventually a new governor appeals to Rome's King in Palestine, Herod Agrippa. And so the gospel was taken to ever higher government levels.

Felix was a Roman governor in Caesarea, Rome's headquarters in what is now Israel. His job today? Facing Paul. The Apostle Paul ended up being more than just a criminal defendant. Felix and his wife Drusilla found themselves confronted with the gospel, a message that brought their own sins to light. Today we watch as the gospel works its power in the ancient world.

Caesarea lies along the northern shore of Israel facing the Mediterranean. This was the site of a famous confrontation. Paul the Apostle had appealed to Caesar in his conflict with Jewish authorities. This meant facing the Roman governor in ancient Caesarea. As the waves lapped on the nearby shore, Governor Felix came face to face with a man the likes of whom he had never seen.

The gospel brings liberty to a culture that's long been bound in tradition. This new liberty is sometimes a problem. Jewish customs were a big deal in Jerusalem, and some new believers there insisted that converts to the Christian faith keep observing Jewish laws. The conflict was sharp, and Paul had to settle an argument that put the outreach of the gospel at risk.

What's your passion? For some, it's making money. For others, it's their art. For Paul, it was the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul rejected the counsel of his peers and went back to Jerusalem after completing two missionary journeys. His determination to settle a church split there, drove him into hardship, deprivation, and eventually, execution in Rome. What price would you pay to do God's will?

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." Indeed, wherever the gospel has gone, light has burst forth into the culture. But sometimes the light is extinguished. Recently, Erwin Lutzer toured the sites of the seven churches of Revelation in what is now Turkey. All of them are long gone. Sand covers their ancient foundations. What happened?

The locals had a good thing going, a famous pagan temple, and a good business making souvenir idols for visitors. Ephesus had silversmiths who sold shrines to the goddess Artemis. When Paul showed up with the gospel, business dropped like a rock, and Paul found himself in a riot. Today we look at why the gospel impacts culture, and trade, and things get real hot real fast.
