The Light Shines on Idols, Part 1 of 2 (Light Shining in Darkness)

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. While living in Corinth, Paul worked as a tentmaker and taught in the local synagogue. Through his efforts, a church was born–a church that later received two letters that we can find in the New Testament. Let’s witness the Gospel’s power in ancient Greece.

If you ever visit ancient Corinth, you will find an amazing excavation of the very streets and buildings that Paul saw when he brought them the Gospel.  As we open God’s Word, let’s watch God open hearts to the Gospel in yet another new region.

Paul was the Apostle to the Gentiles. He moved aggressively to cities in Greece and beyond with the power of the Spirit directing his energies and birthing faith wherever he preached. That power was on display atop a famous hill in a city known for its philosophers.

Mars Hill in Athens is a mound of rock near the famous Acropolis and agora with its pagan gods.  It was here that the Apostle Paul preached the Gospel with power to a group of philosophers who enjoyed argument. They were watching the beginning of a spiritual tidal wave.

The Bible calls the Gospel “the power of God.” The word “power” in Greek is the word that gives us “dynamite” in English. That power was felt in the early church, and today we’ll begin tracing the impact the Gospel made in the first century.

The heroes of faith in Hebrews 11 include ordinary people of flesh and blood like you and I. They believed God despite not seeing immediate responses to their prayers. We, too, can exhibit their kind of faith: believing God no matter what.

Some wonder what good it is to have faith in God when He never seems to answer their prayers. Many lose what faith they have and give up on God altogether. But let’s look at the heroes of faith who believed God no matter what.

When our faith in God is genuine, it causes us to make choices in God’s favor. We willingly take the risk of alienating those around us when we choose God’s way over that of the world. That’s what Moses did, as we read in Hebrews 11.

Some people claim they have faith, yet their lives show little evidence of it. Others who have faith are willing to take risks to live out that faith. Let’s focus on this latter kind of faith, the kind that will survive when testing comes.
