The Light Shines on a King, Part 2 of 2 (Light Shining in Darkness)

October 3, 2013

One never knows what a day may bring forth. Locked up for two years, Paul suddenly faces a Roman King. What would he say? He was on his way to Rome, knowing he faced almost certain death there. But not before getting the gospel to the heart of the world’s dominant empire. On the way, he pled his case before Rome’s king in Israel at the time. Paul seizes the moment to make sure the gospel is understood.

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. What do you do with a political football like Paul? Various Roman leaders punted his case back and forth for two years. Accused of sedition, the Jews wanted him dead.  Paul had appealed to Caesar, and ended up in a Caesarea prison. Years passed.  Eventually a new governor appeals to Rome’s King in Palestine, Herod Agrippa. And so the gospel was taken to ever higher government levels.

Felix was a Roman governor in Caesarea, Rome’s headquarters in what is now Israel.   His job today? Facing Paul. The Apostle Paul ended up being more than just a criminal defendant.  Felix and his wife Drusilla find themselves confronted with the gospel, a message that brought their own sins to light. Today we will watch as the gospel works its power in the ancient world.

Caesarea lies along the northern shore of Israel facing the Mediterranean. This was the site of a famous confrontation. Paul had appealed to Caesar in his conflict with Jewish authorities. This meant facing the Roman governor. As the waves lapped on the nearby shore, Governor Felix came face to face with a man, the likes of whom he had never seen.

The Gospel brought liberty to a culture that had long been bound in tradition. Jewish customs were a big deal in Jerusalem, and some new believers in the first century insisted that converts to the Christian faith keep observing Jewish laws. The conflict was sharp, and Paul had to settle an argument that put the outreach of the Gospel at risk.

The Apostle Paul rejected the counsel of his peers and went back to Jerusalem after completing two missionary journeys. His determination to settle a church split there drove him into hardship, deprivation, and eventually, execution in Rome. What price would you pay to do God’s will?

Pastor Lutzer toured the sites of the seven churches of Revelation in what is now Turkey. All seven of those churches are long gone. Sand covers their ancient foundations. What happened?

In Ephesus, the locals had a good thing going: a famous pagan temple, a good business making souvenir idols for visitors, silversmiths who sold shrines to the goddess Artemis... But when Paul showed up with the Gospel, business dropped, and Paul found himself in a riot. When the Gospel impacts culture and trade, things get real hot real fast.

A great way to present the Gospel is to live it out before your co-workers. While living in Corinth, Paul plied his trade of tent-making and taught in the local synagogue. Through his efforts, a church was born—a church that later received two epistles that made their way into the New Testament.

If you want to visit a place where the Apostle Paul was known to have preached, go to Greece and visit modern-day Corinth. In this ancient city you’ll find an amazing excavation of the very streets and buildings that Paul saw when he first brought the Gospel here. In today’s message we’ll see God working through Paul to bring the Gospel to another section of the world.

On Mars Hill, Paul presented the Gospel to a group of philosophers. Little did they know that they were watching the beginning of a spiritual tidal wave that would engulf the world.
