The Light Shines in Jerusalem #1 of 2

April 22, 2010
What's your passion? For some, it's making money. For others, it's their art. For Paul, it was the gospel of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul rejected the counsel of his peers and went back to Jerusalem after completing two missionary journeys. His determination to settle a church split there, drove him into hardship, deprivation, and eventually, execution in Rome. What price would you pay to do God's will?

Living With Your Passions
In a hyper-sexualized culture, sex is either reduced to pleasure-seeking or conflated with our identity. But God designed us as sexual beings for emotional and spiritual intimacy whose highest calling is to worship Him. In this revised edition, Pastor Erwin Lutzer draws on forty years of ministry experience to present a rationale for sexual purity. He gives an honest answer to the sexual pressures we face like extramarital relationships, self-gratification, same-sex attraction, and more. As desire-driven creatures, we don't have to pursue happiness at the expense of character. With our identity grounded in Christ, we can live victoriously with our passions. Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." Indeed, wherever the gospel has gone, light has burst forth into the culture. But sometimes the light is extinguished. Recently, Erwin Lutzer toured the sites of the seven churches of Revelation in what is now Turkey. All of them are long gone. Sand covers their ancient foundations. What happened?

The locals had a good thing going, a famous pagan temple, and a good business making souvenir idols for visitors. Ephesus had silversmiths who sold shrines to the goddess Artemis. When Paul showed up with the gospel, business dropped like a rock, and Paul found himself in a riot. Today we look at why the gospel impacts culture, and trade, and things get real hot real fast.

If you want to visit a place where the Apostle Paul was known to have preached, go to Greece and visit modern-day Corinth. Ask for directions to the ancient original city, and you'll find an amazing excavation of the very streets and buildings that Paul saw when he first brought the gospel to this crossroads of the ancient world. Watch with me today as God opens hearts to the gospel in yet another place.

The gospel began in Israel, but quickly spread as the Apostles fanned out with their Master's message of redemption. Paul became the Apostle to the Gentiles, and moved aggressively to cities in Greece and beyond with the power of the Spirit directing his energies and birthing faith wherever he preached. Today: that power on display atop a famous hill in a city known for its philosophers.

The Hill of Ares in Athens is a mound of granite facing the famous Acropolis with its temples to pagan gods. At this hill, Paul the Apostle presented the gospel with power to a group of philosophers who enjoyed argument. Little did they know that they were watching the beginning of a spiritual tidal wave that would engulf the known world of their time. Today we hear what happened at a hill also known as Mars Hill.

Jailers know that locks usually stay locked. But when Paul and Silas were sprung from prison, one jailer learned otherwise. The explosive power of the gospel was beginning to be felt in the world of the first century. The Holy Spirit began convicting of sin, causing a fearful jailer to ask, "What must I do to be saved?" Today: more on prison doors flinging open, and faith being birthed anew.

Sometimes we think the gospel is a matter of persuading people to consider Christ. Today, we'll find it's much more. The Bible calls the gospel "the power of God." That word "power" in Greek is the word that gives us "dynamite" in English. That power began to be felt in the early church, and today we'll begin tracing the impact the gospel made in the first century.

Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." God gave this command to parents, not governments. Throughout history, tyrants have always targeted the young, requiring them to be educated in government schools. Do they take Proverbs more literally than many believers? Today: a clarion call for parents to face, and embrace, their obligations.

There's a cardinal rule for all who seek to oppress a people: control the flow of information that the people receive. In the past, that meant turning newspapers into government mouthpieces. Now the job's harder. Technology has increased the avenues through which information can travel. And so, propaganda must become ever more sophisticated. Today we look at the power of propaganda.
