The Hill of Ares in Athens is a mound of granite facing the famous Acropolis with its temples to pagan gods. At this hill, Paul the Apostle presented the gospel with power to a group of philosophers who enjoyed argument. Little did they know that they were watching the beginning of a spiritual tidal wave that would engulf the known world of their time. Today we hear what happened at a hill also known as Mars Hill.

Jailers know that locks usually stay locked. But when Paul and Silas were sprung from prison, one jailer learned otherwise. The explosive power of the gospel was beginning to be felt in the world of the first century. The Holy Spirit began convicting of sin, causing a fearful jailer to ask, "What must I do to be saved?" Today: more on prison doors flinging open, and faith being birthed anew.

Sometimes we think the gospel is a matter of persuading people to consider Christ. Today, we'll find it's much more. The Bible calls the gospel "the power of God." That word "power" in Greek is the word that gives us "dynamite" in English. That power began to be felt in the early church, and today we'll begin tracing the impact the gospel made in the first century.

Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it." God gave this command to parents, not governments. Throughout history, tyrants have always targeted the young, requiring them to be educated in government schools. Do they take Proverbs more literally than many believers? Today: a clarion call for parents to face, and embrace, their obligations.

There's a cardinal rule for all who seek to oppress a people: control the flow of information that the people receive. In the past, that meant turning newspapers into government mouthpieces. Now the job's harder. Technology has increased the avenues through which information can travel. And so, propaganda must become ever more sophisticated. Today we look at the power of propaganda.

Dictators know that imposing laws is step one in achieving absolute power. Control the laws, and you control the people. Laws provide the framework for arrest and prosecution, they instill in people a fear of what might happen if they break those laws. The Christian knows that there is always a higher law, no matter what government may claim. The result is the dilemma of when to disobey those in power.

U.S. unemployment: close to 10 percent. Add those who've given up looking and the real rate approaches 20 percent. American voters know one thing: if they don't have jobs, they have an economic crisis. And when they see government wasting trillions as jobs get more scarce, they revolt, as we saw when Scott Brown upset decades of Democratic control in Massachusetts.

Psalm 33:12 says "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." What about a nation whose God is no longer the Lord? History is replete with nations abandoning God and suffering the inevitable consequences. Nazi Germany began with an evil vision of conquest and ended in a pile of ruins. The glorified Jesus spoke these words in revealing to the Apostle John what was yet to come, as we read in the book of Revelation. Man's greatest need is not economic security. It's a future after death. Only Jesus can provide that future. Today: a celebration of the risen Christ.
